Ease of Use:
Pros:High quality scanning, printing, and copying, very handy to have around
The Bottom Line: This is an easy to use printer with high quality results.
Since my printer died about six months ago, I have gotten a lot of use out of my parents' Hewlett Packard 1210v All-In-One Inkjet Printer for my printing needs. I am not a very technology literate person but I have used the printer for all its available functions. These include printing, copying, and scanning. On the whole I have had a few problems but been pretty impressed as printers go.

The 1210v is pretty compact considering it is a copier as well as a printer. At the time of purchase Hewlett Packard was claiming this was the smallest multi-function printer available. I'm not sure if that is still the case. It fits on a small tv stand next to the desk. The color scheme is your basic light gray/dark gray and the model has slightly rounded corners. The see-through lid covers the copying surface and all the operational buttons are exposed at the top left and clearly labeled. Its a very snazzy looking and high-tech printer/copier. This model cost about $95 when my mother and I purchased it at Staples about a year and a half ago. The 1210v comes with software which is easy to install.
After fighting with my own printer for years I had forgotten how nice it is to actually press a button and have your document print without any major stress. The quality of printing is very, very good. We have used the printer on everything from basic papers and recipes to photographs. I even printed some photographs offline to use in my wedding slide show and the quality could not be distinguished from the other photographs in the show. There have been no problems with the ink running or smearing after the pages come out of the printer. The speed is pretty good and I am shocked at how quickly high quality copies are spit out. Of course, printing photograph quality copies takes a little longer but is still much quicker than a photo printing machine at a supermarket or drugstore. The printer is about average as far as noise goes.
My only complaints have to do with the fact that the printer is picky about the type of paper used. If the paper is too thin and inexpensive, the printer will pull more than one sheet through at a time resulting in big printing problems. Likewise, if the paper is too thick sometimes the printer will jam. For best results make sure the paper you use is intended for a printer OR copier, not just a copier. Copier paper tends to be too thin. If you must use a thicker type of paper or tagboard, choose the lightest possible variety. We have gotten the printer to print on envelopes, address labels, and glossy photo paper but sometimes it takes a little patience.
The copying is also easy to use, simply put your original on the glass and press the copy button. The default is single copy but it can be set up for multiple copies of an original. The copier is called a Digital Imaging Copier which means high quality copies. Any complaints I have with this feature is the same as the printer, sometimes the paper jams if the correct variety is not used. Copies can be done in either color or black and white. The speed is 12 ppm for black and 10 ppm for color, which isnt extremely fast but I wouldnt think you would use this type of printer for major jobs. The ink cartridges seem to last a long time for either copying or printing. It is very, very convenient to have a printer in the home for all the times you need to make a copy of something for documentation before mailing it.
Fortunately for my mother and I, this is a scanner for dummies. Neither of us had ever used a scanner before but you simply have to put the photograph on the glass screen and press scan and the image will appear in a file on your computer as long as the printer is hooked up and the software downloaded. You can then use the software or any other photo editing software to crop or edit the photographs.
As with the photographic printing discussed above, the quality of the scans is very good. It is tough to distinguish between the original photo and the scanned image. We have really enjoyed this feature and gotten more use out of it than we thought. It is nice to be able to put older photos from before we had digital cameras on the computer with our more recent digital photos. My mom always liked to scan photos from my childhood to send to me at college when I was having a bad day.
The HP 1210v uses the 56 black and 57 tri-color cartridges. They last a fairly long time and we have only had to purchase new ones two or three times in the past year. If you print a lot of photographs the ink supply will deplete more quickly, but ordinarily we go through the black one first. These cartridges can be found at any chain store such as Target, Walmart, or Staples. We find Target is consistently in stock and less expensive than office supply stores.
Finding an All-In-One Printer
Hewlett Packard brings out new models at the speed of light and by the time you read this review you may have difficulty finding the 1210v in stores. The hp 1315 seems very similar except for a few additional colors in the ink cartridge and is retailing for around $100.00 at most places. You can check out multi-function printers on the Hewlett Packard website at http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/store_access.do?template_type=storefronts&category=all_in_ones&browse_by_usage=4Color&aoid=22677.
This is a convenient desktop printer with good quality printing, copying, and scanning. It has held up well for the past year and a half, even copying after several hundred wedding programs and other necessities shortly after purchasing it. The price was very reasonable for all the features included with this printer. bThere are a few minor inconveniences such as paper jams but on the whole this occurs less than with any other home office printer I have used. After having a year and a half of good experiences with my parents HP 1210v All-in-One I am looking into purchasing a very similar model for my own home office.
