mugglestuff's Full Review: Hewlett Packard iPAQ h1935 Pocket PC
I own three PIM machines, Handspring visor deluxe, Dell Axim X5 and my most recent purchase the Ipaq 1935. I bought the 1935 to have something more portable than the Dell. I will not bore you with the specs of the unit as you can easily look them up on the net.
The Ipaq is so small and light it feels more like a toy than a sophisitcated piece of electronics. To look at it all you really see is the screen and the small row of buttons on the bottom with the D-pad in the center. After having the Dell for almost a year turning on the Ipaq was a WOW experience comparable to watching a DVD versus a VHS tape. The display was a lot clearer and vibrant than the dell but does have a slight yellow tint when viewed at an angle. The stylus is very slim but still sturdy. I carry a Pilot Pentopia stylus/pen/pencil combo to use when I am doing more than poke and click.
The 1935 comes installed with Windows PPC 2003 which is more stable and faster than 2002 which is loaded into the Dell. While the 1935 is using a 200MHz processor and the Axim a 400MHz I have not noticed much difference except when viewing large pictures. It runs mpeg video and mp3's smoothly without skipping or pausing.
The Ipaq comes with a lot of extras on the CD with it. Some of the extras are trialware but the free ones enhance my 1935 nicely. I especially like the Resco file explorer and IPAQ image viewer.
I recomend a case as the 1935 does not come with one so I got the Rhinoskin Aluminum hard case which protects it like a tank. With the case the 1935 is still smaller than the Axim X5. I also recomend an SD card right out of the box as the 1935 has only 64MB of user memory. Buy the most memory you can afford and you will not regret it, I have a Sandisk 256MB SD card which gives me plenty of room for MP3's and all my files.
I immediatly installed PocketMind.com's pocket music to play MP3's as well as PocketTV which are both free to individual users. I also added a little applet called switch by Harald-Rene Flasch which is great for switching between running programs. BatMemTime Today screen plugin is another great freebie which I think is also a must have program, just make sure you install it into Main memory and not the memory card. Most applications run fine installed on the SD card but the trade off is that if you remove the card you cannot use the program so you must decide which ones to install that way to save valuable system memory.
The buttons give a good click when pressed and the D-pad has a solid feel also with good clicks when pressed without feeling mushy. The speaker is mounted behind the D-pad and gives clear sound given its size. The microphone records sound well with a slight hiss in the background.
The only thing that the dell beats the ipaq on is the dual card slots. It gives you a lot of flexability to move and transfer information using CF1 or 2 and SD cards at the same time.
My biggest complaint on the Ipaq is the sync/charge cable which is very small and testy to plug in. The sync cable has a place to plug in the AC adaptor to charge and an extra plug to just use the charger. The plugs have arrows on them to show which end is UP but my charge adaptor has to be turned 180 degrees to work. HP uses a 2.5mm stereo jack on the 1935 so if you want to use headphones you have to use the 2.5mm to 3.5mm stereo adaptor that comes with it which is one more thing to loose.
Bottom Line: I am very happy with my 1935 and now carry it in place of my Dell Axim and the clearer screen makes it a pleasure to use. The ipaq does all it says and I am glad I spent the money on it. If you want wireless you can step up to the 1945 for some extra cash.
