The Bottom Line: I feel this is the best PDA on the market from HP at the moment because the possibilities are enormous I think it is a good investment.
kularm's Full Review: Hewlett Packard iPAQ h5555 Pocket PC
Before September 2003 i had in my possesion a plam tungstem T2 (see my review), which i found ok for a basic user, but after an unfortunate meeting with a man in an alley i was left without one! Therefore i needed a replacement, i had £600 (sounds over the top but i needed nav software also), i had heard about the ipaq's from a friend and i decided to endeverded to buy one.
I came home with a new PC h5550. This model sounded the best to me, as it had a fingerprint scanner embeded into the screen, bluetooth and basic Wifi capabilities. The screen had a colour variance of 65,000 colours and 128 mb sdram. I beleived that this was a beast, although the processor wasn't anything special being the same as most PDA's of its class at 400Mhz. WIthin the first two weeks of use i found that a few problems arose, everytime i went to the office or went out the bluetooth kicked in after every half an hour with a list of phones in range. I found this tiresome so seeked help from the HP service center who helped me and delt with the problem quickly. The second problem is that my girlfriend who is left handed found it a hasle using her right hand to press the nav buttons when not using the stylus, i although being right handed found it easy to use. I did find however that it is possible to fix the problem by finding various patches on the web.
The pda also offers a backup option where it reserves 20Mb of storage space and secures it so that is isn't effected by battery failure.
When i used the activesync to connect the unit to my laptop i did find the connection was a bit loose but it still worked fast and without fuss, although the software given with the unit does take a bit of ram on my laptop, so when i was listening to music at the same time it did drop at places.
I would suggest buying this unit, but only if you are a business user as there is limited 'fun' capablities that come with or are free to obtain for/with the unit. Also the high security standards of a fingerprint scanner, password, VPN software for secure connection to netwaorks and a good FileCrypto Data Encryption feature which provides up to date file encription. But at a price of ~ £490 you have to be absolutly sure about your decision.
