I AM a real person- not a tech at HITACHI who is paid to put in the gleaming reviews.

I bought my 50V500A unit new in May 04 for $2700. Having never had good results with extended warranty I did not spend the extra 300 bucks.
The beautiful picture at last 6 months beyond factory warranty. The picture began to get a red-purplish spot - most noticeable on dark scenes. I read the owners manual which stated the picture would begin to get changes in colors as the bulb neared the end of it's life. SO - I ordered a new bulb and decided to wait until it blew before installing it. The spot grew larger over the next 6 months so I finally changed the bulb. To my surprise picture was no better and the spot quickly started getting larger. I searched the web and found there were a tremendous amount of people with the same problem. I called HITACHI and an extremely rude rep. told me there was no reported problems with the set and no recall. According to him all TV's wear out. DUH! But one expects a TV that is advertised of having a 50.000 hour life to last longer than roughly 8000 hrs of viewing! A certified HITACHI Service Call found that the light engine was bad. The tech says they have to change the light engines on these units all the time. The cost is $1500.
I'm thinking if HITACHI expects to give their CEO the heavenly life of extrordinary wealth they should make a recall of parts with defective design.
