Pros: Small, cheap, and does a decent job in a relatively large room.
Cons: Does not filter nearly as much as more expensive models.
The Bottom Line: Small, quiet and relatively effective. If you're poor like me and you're looking for a way to keep your environment a little cleaner, this is a good buy.

| cassie83's Full Review: Holmes Products HAP240 Air Purifier |
Living in an apartment that has windows only on one side, I have problems with ventilation even during the summer. Now that winter has hit Ohio, I needed something to keep the indoor air breathable. So being a good American, I headed to Wal-Mart and bought the cheapest product available, the $30 Holmes HAP240 air purifier/ionizer.
The product:
I opened the box to find a white appliance measuring about 10" deep by 14" wide by 6" high. There is no assembly and it plugs right in.
The filter has three speeds: high, normal, and quiet. I set it on high and placed it on the top shelf of my bookshelves, a good spot since the top and front of the unit need to be clear.
The results:
The first pleasant surprise was that even on the high setting, this filter does not make much noise. On the quiet setting, it can still be heard but I doubt it would bother even the very lightest of sleepers.
Several hours of high filtration later, the air already seemed nicer in my bedroom than outside. But the real challenge came when a friend who is a smoker came over. She smoked 2-3 cigarettes over the next hour. Although the room still smelled like smoke, the air itself was much easier to breathe and the smell left in a few hours instead of a few days.
Although the filter is only rated for a 10' by 11' room, I am now using it in a 14' x 18' master bedroom with an attached closet and bathroom. The air is noticeably cleaner in here and I cough less. I don't know what (if anything) the ionizer portion is doing, but the purifier function is definitely working as advertised.
Recommendation:
I don't know that this $30 air filter is the solution for anyone who has breathing problems, smokers in the house, or some situation like that. But for what it is, this filter does its job and is an excellent value. It processes more air than more expensive filters and, overall, does a decent job of circulating and cleaning the air in normal situations.
There are products that cost $1,000 and up that will make a large room pretty much nothing but pure air. This Holmes filter is not one of those by any means, but I find it well worth the $30 it cost.
