| tgregoryt's Full Review: Holmes Products HAP240 Air Purifier |
Let me tell you my history here: I used to work as a mud-logger in the oil field, and what this means for this story is that I worked in a 12'x 30' trailer with men that smoked. And when I say "smoked", what I mean is at least five packs per day of the smelliest Marlboro's you can stick in a box.
Now you can imagine that my nose - to say nothing of my lungs - roared rather intense complaints to my poor brain, which then searched for an answer. And as this happened to be a Wal-Mart, and happened to be affordable, I went with the purchase and hoped for the best.
I think I got the best. Before I got the Holmes Air purifier, the room smelled like a dead rat. Literally - one time I went into the trailer and was looking for the dead rat that smelled so bad. After this - I suppose you could still smell the cigarettes ever so slightly, but it was hardly noticeable and within fifteen minutes of the room being smoke-free I couldn't smell the cigarettes at all.
Now I no longer work in a trailer with smokers, but since the device still works I use this to filter my apartment. A friend of mine that is allergic to cats came over and had no problems. Of course it was only one night, but still that means something. Whether this thing can remove all allergens I don't know, but it certainly does a great job with odors.
I've seen air purifiers out there that are much more expensive. And it is likely that many of them handle a much larger volume. But for my apartment and my needs this little air purifier is acceptable, and has lasted for many years.
The only drawback to me is that the HEPA filters are supposed to be replaced monthly, although generally I go with every three months. In the smoke-filled environment the filters turned black. In my house I don't generally notice anything. But the filters are around $15.00-20.00, which to me seems pricey for a monthly change. Perhaps I do not know anything of filters and these are really very cheap filters in comparison. Auscultatus calls the filters cheap.
If you need a product that will remove odors, this is very effective, particularly for a small space. Even for a larger space this is effective, especially if you put it next to the source of the odors such as the cat litter box. Either way, it is a good deal and a highly reliable machine.
