| rgathright's Full Review: Hoover S2531 Sprint Upright Vacuum |
The humble Hoover Sprint is my favorite vacuum because of its lightweight construction and powerful cleaning capabilities. Some people accuse me of being a John McCain follower because I refuse to get rid of this eight year old vacuum and change to a new one, but I just cannot believe a change would work for me. If you have a home or business with wood floors, I encourage you to read my review and get your own!
Utilitarian in appearance the upright vacuum has a navy blue plastic case with an easily removable clear plastic canister which contains the filter bag. Exhaust air vents out two 4x3/8 inch side ports at the top rear of the vacuum. You will want to angle the top of the unit away from the area you are cleaning because it will tend to blow dust and hair around if angled improperly. The entire unit is made of plastic and gives it a very light feeling when you grab the molded plastic handle. A 20 ft cord will give you plenty of distance and the cord folds up nicely around the pegs on the back once you are done.
Dirt Canister And Collection Bag
No other upright vacuum in my collection has half the capacity of the Hoover Sprint! Not only does the bag fold into the body while being used to save space, but the entire clear canister was designed to be filled 50% of the way before suction power is compromised. As a result, I can clean all the wood floors in my house without emptying the canister.
Heavy particle separation is the reason for the Model S2531's superior capacity. Any particle as heavy as a grain of sand falls to the bottom of the plastic canister rather than being caught in the bag. For example, I once used the vacuum to pickup several pennies off the floor. The pennies were easily sucked up and dropped to the bottom of the canister.
The collection bag appears to hold 1 quart of dirt. Made of cotton and a nylon material, the bag is very strong and I have never needed to replace it. Removal is as simple as popping the plastic lever on the front of the clear canister and pulling out the bag. Invert the bag over a trash can and then replace. Gently slide the canister into the body of the vacuum and snap.
Attachments
The bag less broom type cleaner comes right out of the box with an on board hose and crevice tool. The hose can be snapped into the back of the case for quick touch ups. I found the hose and tool to cumbersome to carry on the cleaner and instead put these attachments in the closet. Interestingly, you will find that the wide mouth of the vacuum itself does a great job of pulling dirt from corners and under furniture.
Power Consumption
Using a Kill-A-Watt meter, the Sprint pulls 428 watts at start with a minimum of 415 watts which occurred after 3 minutes of usage. For comparison the Dyson DC07 Animal Bagless full size vacuum cleaner pulls 1050 watts. For this reason, I tend to use the Hoover Sprint to save a few extra pennies on my monthly Entergy electric bill.
Wood / Tile Floor Performance
Like Michael Phelps in water, this vacuum really shines on hard floors. Alright that's a bad illustration but you get the point. Whether you are on concrete or a newly laid wood laminate floor, this vacuum can get nearly all the dirt!
Area Rug Performance
Floor mats and other style rugs can be cleaned with about 50% efficiency simply because of the Hoover Sprint's strong pulling power.
Pile Carpet Performance
The weakness of any vacuum missing a rotating brush is pile carpet. You can grab large object the pistachio shells my Hyacinth macaw drops on the floor but that is it. Even he knows I cannot vacuum very well with this and gets great joy squawking bad bird at me when I do this.
Summary
In the past eight years, this bagless vacuum has never failed me. Not many household appliances can claim that since I have personally thrown away four vacuums and six coffee makers over the same time period at my house! In closing, I wish you the best of luck find your own Hoover Sprint! Just don't ask me for mine because you would have to win the lottery first!
