Awhile back I wrote a review saying I was upset that Epinions didn't have a better way to compare items. I was out vacuum hunting at the time and wanted someplace that I could go to compare actual people's experiences with vacuums without having to go into each and every style and look them up. Okay it was the lazy girl in me wanting an easy answer...
I checked out Consumer Report for the side-by-side comparison I was wanting. So out I went and hit the stores. I ended up purchasing a Hoover Self Propelled Wind Tunnel at Costco.
The vacuum was expensive (at least in my book -- if you have money to burn it might seem like a bargain!), even at Costco - not including tax I paid $339.00 and home I went with my new toy... (so sad when I can be excited about a vacuum purchase!)
The first day I found 2 flaws... #1 the vacuum was really heavy and so going up and down the stairs was no fun at all and #2 the hose feature is not attached and so when you want to do edges or furniture (or under something) you need to hook up the hose which I just wrapped around the machine (wasn't pretty, but it was easier than trying to find it in every room I went into)
The pluses were several: #1 long cord, I could do a large area without having to move the plug. #2 did a good job cleaning the carpet and has a green light to let you know when the area you are vacuuming is done (not sure I was too believing though... there were times when it refused to go to green and I can't believe the areas were THAT dirty). #3 the self propelled feature made the heavy weight easier to deal with in use (didn't help in carrying it though!). #4 a 15" cleaning width. #5 good headlight. Also it comes with extra bags and belts (at least it did at Costco)
Okay having said all of that -- I held off writing my review to see how I would feel 1 month later.... Here we are and it is actually just slightly longer than that. I no longer own this vacuum!
I know we are tough to clean up after but certainly 5 or 6 weeks with us shouldn't kill a vacuum! I turned it on the other day and the motor starting smoking... I turned it off, checked it thoroughly, waited an hour and tried again... more smoke and nasty smell! Of course, I had company coming over that night and so I REALLY needed it to work! I did some other things and gave it a third try (following the 3rd try is the charm theory) - no luck!
So now it is the third strike you are out theory and I returned the item to Costco... While doing this I noticed another one sitting at the return desk and asked the person behind the counter to see why it was returned (I had thought I might try and just exchange mine for a new one assuming this was a fluke!) and she said that the motor had died....
Well, there is safety in numbers and I felt like we weren't so awful to the machine after all! I had had a Riccar for 10 years, a Dirt Devil for 2 and a different (less expensive) Hoover for 6 so I am thinking we were not 100% to blame...
If I had written this review back a week or so after my purchase of the vacuum I would have given it a better review... Still would have had the hose and weight flaws but at least it was still running then!
I bought a Eureka this time (cost a bit less) and will report back on it after I have given it some time.
