meleahk's Full Review: Hoover F5892-900 SteamVac Upright Vacuum
Well, since hubby has been home these past 3 weeks recovering from complications due to surgery, he has been getting on my last nerve and since other things (in the bedroom) are on hold as well, I had a lot of energy. And so did he! So I put him to work as well as myself! I’ll teach him to have complications from surgery.
In fact, I told him “The next time you decide to have surgery, think longer and harder about it buddy! This staying at home, in my way is getting to bother me and I don’t get none either to boot! Well that is just like a man isn’t it! He just laughed at me as he always does. Actually I am sure that I am getting on his nerves as well.
But after a very long time this girl has managed to do something that needed to be done and had been put off one to many times. What’s that you say? Well, don’t go around telling anyone because people may want me to come and do theirs as well and that is not an option, but I shampooed the carpets and the furniture! But of course and trust me on this, I will let you borrow my hubby to get him out of the house!
The Product
The Hoover® SteamVac™ F5892 is one of the best steam cleaners on the market. And it’s a name that can be trusted. My neighbor and I bought this model to share between homes because we are such great friends as well as neighbors and I am so glad we are!
The unit has 5 brushes that deep cleans carpets and scrubs bare floors. And it’s easy to use too! All you use hot tap water and steam cleaner solution. Any brand. I used the Wal Mart Store brand “Sam’s Choice” and it did a fine job. And the cost was only $4.97 at my local Wal Mart.
The SteamVac™ cost on sale $189.00 at our local BJ’s Warehouse.
Assembly Required
There is a pamphlet with easy to use instructions on putting the unit together and how to use. Along with pictures for you to look at as you assemble. When you first get your unit it will be broken down as follows: Deep Cleaner, Upper handle with powered hand tool and scrub module, 2 bolts, 3 nuts (an extra one included), Bare floor attachment, Hose, Stair/upholstery nozzle, Hose rack and screw, Clip for hose and Nozzle clean-out tool. Follow directions for assembly. Some units may have a sample of various cleaning solutions, ours did not.
Once the unit is together you will have an upright positioned unit with the clean solution tank (upper tank) on top of the recovery tank (bottom tank). Both face the front of the unit. The hose will be at the back as is the place for is for the attachments used for cleaning stairs and furniture. You will also find two attachments on the front of the unit, covered by a clear plastic piece. These are used for bare floor cleaning.
The “On/Off” switch is on the left bottom, backside and the “Release” switch will be found on the right bottom, backside. This switch allows the handle to fold backwards for easier use of the unit. Both are within the reach of either one of your feet.
You will find the “Release Switch” for the water in the handle where your hand will go. This makes it easy to use. You simply will release when you are ready to wet the carpet and let go when you think you have enough water/solution.
The plug is also at the back of the unit. This cord is really nice because it’s long and easy to handle. When through you wrap the cord in it’s on place out of the way.
Using The SteamVac™
Usage is very easy. You simply take the handle of the solution tank and press down and out it comes. Use the lid for measuring. There is a fill line to go by. You get the water hot and fill this tank up to its fill line. Clearly marked! Put the tank back into place by positioning correctly and snapping the handle back into place. (The solution tank will need to be refilled every so often. Usually after empting the recovery tank every 2nd time you will need to refill the solution tank.)
The recovery tank has a handle that will lift up for easy carrying but also locks this tank when in use. This tank is clear and you can see the water as it comes into it. And there is a red ball that you can see rising as the water rises. When the red ball gets to the top, the sound of the unit changes indicating it is time to empty. (This is the only bad part of the entire unit. After about 5 maybe 8 minutes or so you will need to empty) But both tanks are very easy to remove and put back. If I can do it so can you!
On the front right hand side of the unit, down towards the bottom you will find a switch that will allow you to choose from “hi or low” brush usage or “none”. The “none” needs to be selected when using the unit on furniture.
Now that you have the unit together, the solution in the upper tank, the lower tank locked in you are ready to go. Simply click the release switch that brings the handle downward, click the on/off switch and start to move forward. By pressing the water release switch you will allow the solution to hit your carpets. Slowly bring the unit back to you after you have gone forward as far as you wanted to. You will see the water coming into the recovery tank as I stated already.
Carpets will be almost dry when you are through. Within an hour completely dry! You may want to test an area first though before starting to make sure the solution will not ruin your carpet.
Cleaning The Furniture
This is very easy to do. Following the tank instructions above, be sure that you have the lever for brush usage found on the front right hand side towards the bottom of the unit in the “none” position.
Attach the piece of tool you want to use to the hose. There is a release switch on the hose that allows you to release the solution as needed. Then go back over the wet area to get up the access water.
Drying time is within an hour if you get all the access water up. Please test an area of your furniture before using the solution.

How I Feel
Let me tell you something! If you need to work off some frustrations then shampooing the carpets and furniture is one way to do it!
This unit has done a terrific job on my carpets and my sofa and love seat. It did so well that I shampooed all the carpets and all the furniture! It’s nice to see everything all nice and cleaned. And the solution I used smells really nice!
Clean up of the unit is very simple also. I took my new Flat Hose to both pieces then used warm soapy water to clean out. I used the water hose first to get all sand and dirt from the recover tank and soap from the solution tank. I took a damp cloth and ran over the cord and attachments. I will also take the broom to the bottom of the unit when completely dry to get off all of the left behind dirt that may be on the unit’s brushes.
The wheels on the unit are at the back and are made of a durable plastic, the unit needs to be moved on the wheels only. But after a few tries of trying to move the unit in a different manner you will learn to lift just a tad and move the unit on the wheels. Really that is the best way in using the unit even; just mess with it a bit and you will get the hang of it.
My hubby helped, which was healthy for him (trust me on this) and he even shampooed one room by himself. Telling me that he could handle it so I let him. That room looked the nicest in the house!
Storage of the unit is easy as well. You can put in any closet easily. Mine will stay at the neighbor’s home because she has more closet space than I do.
I have really enjoyed and will continue to enjoy this SteamVac™ by Hoover®! It really is simple to use! However it is a little heavy but not to bad.
