During our recent travels we found Rock Springs, Wyoming a decent town to find a place to stay for the night, being decent sized we figured we could easily find a suitable hotel. Driving into Rock Spring the majority of the town sits in a valley like area. Unfortunately that day they were having something of a wind storm that was blowing sand and dust all over the valley. Deciding not to drive around in the main part of town, I took my planned exit onto Highway 191 North off of I-80. Before making a quick exit out of Rock Springs I seen a Best Western to the right and decided to check the price and availability.
Upon entering the hotel I asked how much a regular room with two beds would be. The answer was 110 dollars plus tax. Ugh, the hotel itself looked fairly old and taking a sweep around the outside left me wondering about the inside of the hotel in the first place. I decided to go ahead and try it out. The lady at the counter assigned us a room on the upper level of the hotel. When she said you will have to go up steps, I immediately stopped her. I had my son with me and his play-pen, not to mention my Mother who has had knee surgery and yet another bad knee to deal with. The lady quickly showed me an example of the eight steps we would have to up to get to our room. We were either going to have to go up 8 step or down 8 steps to get to any of their available rooms, because of the bi-level style of the hotel. With regret I took our room keys out to the car and drove around to a parking spot.
Entering our room it was obvious that the rooms had recently been remodeled, probably within the last year or two. The hotel features about 100 room total with a few outside access rooms, but most are accessed through the inside on an upper or lower level. The inside lower level rooms surround the Indoor Pool area, while upper level rooms are a floor above the pool area and feature a walkway above the pool area. In appearance the hotel looks as though at one time it was all out-side access but they built a roof over the inner rooms, which creates a triangle like shape, and made the rooms around the pool and the pool itself indoor.
The hotel does offer an indoor pool, but offers little else in the way of other out of room amenities, such as a business center or fitness center which has become common place in most hotels.
A decent sized restaurant is located off of the main lobby with entrée prices ranging from 9 to 20 dollars in price.
During our visit at the Outlaw Inn we stayed in a standard, double bed room. The room featured two double size bed with ample linens and two pillow each. The beds still featured the older style bedspread which we all know does not get washed every time like it should. The room also featured two chairs with a small round table, a desk with a high back chair, and a dresser unit with a refrigerator on one side and 3 drawers on the other. A TV was on top of the dresser.
The bathroom was spilt into two different areas in the back portion of the room. The sink, counter and a small closet nook were located through an open doorway and a full bath with shower were located to the right through a door.
Our room was fairly clean with two exception. One, our pillows had a slight odor, A major pet-peeve for my Mom and a pretty good one for myself. We had brought our own pillows along, just incase we ran into this problem, but in this day and age you really shouldnt have to worry about it, Everything should be clean. And Two, the beds had no barriers underneath them and the maids had missed some trash under them. I wouldnt have even noticed it, if it werent for my one year old son.
Overall
Overall I was minimally satisfied with this particular hotel. I felt that the price was mainly way out of hand and the hotel was only truly worth a fraction of the end price which ended up being over 121 dollars. While our room was fairly clean with the exception of the pillows and underneath the beds, we shouldnt have seen those flaws. The room was also put together funny in the bathroom area. To the left of the sink area was a granite top bench below the hanging rod for clothes. I nor my mother could figure this out, since it extended past the sink, into a small corner, it looked like they guessed what to do with the space instead of finding something useful for it. Underneath the bench was a door, that wasnt locked, that lead to a number of pipes and wires, which caused a major problem for my son and his curiosity, not to mention the whole space just looked odd.
Another disappointment for me was the pool. While the area was clean as was the pool, the temperature was fairly cold and ended up turning my sons lips blue after 20 minutes of swimming. The pool was okay, just not or my small child and it took me quite awhile to adjust to the water myself.
My other main complaint was there was no continental breakfast although you could get breakfast at their slightly high-priced restaurant.
The staff overall was very friendly however and I had no complaints there what so ever.
Of course since I had my one year old son with me, his protection was important. So how Toddler Safe was our room at the Outlaw Inn? This hotel didnt fair very well for us. The room had three outlets out in the open with an extension cord plugged into one of them. There were many wires and an outlet underneath the desk, which was visible and easily accessible to any child. Covering the outlets was easy with the outlet covers I brought along, but concealing all of the hanging wires was a task we never truly got figured out.
In the end if I were to return to Rock Springs, WY I would definitely seek different accommodations.
