I Love Hotel Adagio!

Written: Apr 18 '07 (Updated Apr 18 '07)
Pros:Location, friendly and knowledgeable staff
Cons:Can't think of any
The Bottom Line: The extremely helpful and friendly staff alone is enough to make your stay enjoyable. The hotel has everything you need for a pleasant stay.

I stayed at the Adagio 4/5/07 thru 4/9/07, I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The location is great, the hotel is well decorated and clean, and the staff is very knowledgeable, extremely helpful and FRIENDLY.

Rooms: The rooms are warmly decorated. I had a standard room which included a mini-bar, room safe, refrigerator, coffee maker, water heater for tea, iron, ironing board, cable TV, desk, comfy chairs with ottoman. There are complimentary Aveeda products in the bathroom, plenty of closet space with extra bedding and pillows. The bed is very comfortable. There is a thermostat but no air conditioning. It doesn't get very hot there, the ceiling fan will suffice.

Hotel and Staff: The lobby is nicely decorated and inviting. The front desk staff was very knowledgeable of the area. They gave good recommendations on where to go and what to do and arranged excursions for us. They were extremely friendly and very patient with our endless questions. I travel extensively and they were by far the friendliest hotel staff I've encountered.

The hotel restaurant, Cortez, is rated as one of the best in the area, but unfortunately it was closed when I was there. The hotel gave us complimentary breakfast every morning to compensate.

There is a fitness center on the premises, but the hills of San Francisco will give you a good work out.

The hotel also provides free internet access.

Getting Around: You don't need a car. The public transportation system rivals NYC - except it is much cleaner. Make sure you get a transit map because the streetcars may not announce the stops. You can buy a day or weekly transit pass that can be used for all transportation (streetcars, busses, trolleys, etc.).

Things to do and see: Go to Fisherman's Wharf, there are many things to keep you busy there, plus you can pick up ferries to go to Sausalito, Alcatraz or a ride under the Golden Gate Bridge. Don't waste your time going to Sausalito, you won't find anything there that you can't find elsewhere in San Francisco.

Haight and Ashbury is a fun area where hippie-types, punks and Goths live in harmony. There is a "Grateful Dead" house that is a big tourist attraction.

You must go to Golden Gate Park; it is the bigger CA version of NY'sC entral Park.

Eat Drink and Party: There are plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance of the hotel. Across the street is a lounge/bar called "Swig" that is very popular. There is a jazz place called "Biscuit and Blues" around the corner and more interesting clubs on Polk Street. Don't be scared of the Polk Street area, it looks a bit rough but there are plenty of people walking around at night, in and out of the clubs and bars.

Other things to know: There are a lot of bums around, I'm a native NY'er and it was a bit much, even for me. They mostly keep to themselves.

The streets going toward Taylor are more touristy, the streets going toward Jones are a bit rough. It's amazing what a difference a few streets can make.

The hotel can assist you with getting a car or taxi to and from the airport. The shuttle may be the best bet for smaller groups.

The overall atmosphere was very relaxing, laid-back and easy. There is no need to get dressed up if you don't want to...plenty of upscale places to go if you do. I highly recommend visiting at least once, and the Adagio is the place to stay.
