Pros: Feels like you're in Europe without having to fly.
Cons: Bad customer service. Everything in this hotel is overpriced.
The Bottom Line: This hotel has a lot of character. Wonderful old world charm. Very Elegant. Close to everything. A spitting distance from Union Square and the center of town.

| dkla2001's Full Review: Hotel Monaco |
This is one of the better experiences I've had with a hotel. It was such a powerful experience that It's made me a repeat customer. I've stayed in a lot of hotels. I love to try out new hotels, but with this one, I had such a great time, I wanted to go back.
The rooms are small, which is a bummer but they have a magical aura of old world charm.
The hotel has a unique vibe. It's hard to describe. It's one of the hotels that has true character. A hotel that is different, and I say that as a compliment. In an age where many hotels are controlled by large corporations and have that standard corporate look and feel. Going to a hotel that dares to have it's own character is a breath of fresh air.
The entrance is stunning, with a flashy staircase with a large image of a naked blonde woman flying amidst the stars. It's a very grande experience. I've included a picture from their website :

They have a very expensive but very classy restaurant: GRANDE CAFE. TO SUMMARIZE THIS CAFE IN TWO WORDS:
EUROPEAN ELEGANCE.
It's way overpriced, but they definetely know how to make food.
Even if you're not staying in their hotel, I recommend going to the grand caffe for a late afternoon coffee. Amazing bread. Wonderful coffee, and lot's of mouth watering treats.
LOCATION:
It's very close to Union Square, the center of town, so staying there is basically staying near everything. It's the PERFECT location.
Rooms I stayed in were very quite, and I'm very sensitive to noise. Bed was soft and inviting, but I must say it was not perfect, I have slept on better beds in my life.
They have an amazing spa that has eucalyptus steam room, sauna and whirlpool. It too looks very elegant and relaxing. Just look at the architecture:

The hotel is a pet friendly hotel. This is what they advertise on their website:
"The boutique Hotel Monaco in downtown San Francisco takes care of all its guests in style, including our four-legged friends, taking the term "pet friendly hotel" to a new level.
Our luxury San Francisco hotel's pet friendly Bone-A-Petit package features bottled water, a dog bowl, Good Dog towels, top quality chew toys, gourmet dog cookies, Hotel Monaco's temporary dog tags and clean up bags. Y company during your stay with us. Our housekeeping staff has been trained to feed and take care of the goldfish - all you need to do is enjoy."
There are goldfish in the room, so even if you don't bring a pet you'll have a small pet while you're staying there.
The front desk are not always helpful. I was there several times, and it seems whomever I dealt with was always the same. Extremely arrogant.
Guess because this hotel is so European in nature, the people working there think they can have the horrible attitude of French hotel concierges toward American's visiting their country and not speaking any French.
To conclude:
Highly recommend. Book your stay online. If you have to go last minute to San Fran, and don't have time to book online, take the Monaco's WEBSITE customer support number and call them. You'll get a much cheaper price than if you'd call the hotel directly. Kind of dumb that their own website's customer support number gives a different price quote than the front desk. But again, it's European, so it has it's own rules and laws. I wanted to extend my stay by a day, and it was not easy as the front desk quoted me a much more expensive price than I booked the hotel online, so I had to call the Monaco's website and extend through them.
This hotel is way overpriced, but online there are killer deals that make this hotel's price affordable.
Overall I had a wonderful stay here. It's a four star luxury boutique hotel in San Francisco by Union Square, Moscone Convention Center and the heart of downtown.
For those needing a bigger room, look elsewhere. But for those wanting a small adventure and a different experience this place will definetly be the place.
