| Brood_McEto's Full Review: Hoyle Word Games 2000 for Windows |
I've been a fan of Hoyle's computer games since my fiancée's uncle got her the Board Games for Christmas one year. So I like to try these games from time to time.
I picked up Word games because my mother and my fiancée are both into word games. It's easy to play, and all the games are games you should already be familiar with.
My favorite games are the 'Double-Cross' and 'Wordox' games. Both of these games are similar to Scrabble.
In Double-Cross, there is a word already down on the board and everyone has 6 letters to make words with. You can lay down the tiles in any order, and they don't necessarily have to be an actual word. If it is a word, then the tiles 'stabilize' and you can use the tile for another word. If it's not stabilized, then this letter isn't open for other words, and in fact, can be 'blown-up' or can disappear when the other letters around it stabilize and render it unusable. Throughout the board there are 'special' tiles that have point values or are 'mystery' tiles. In the four corners are bombs. There is one bomb for each player. If other people put a tile on your bomb, then all you unstabilized tiles get blown up and subtract 4 points for each tile. If a player plays a tile on their own bomb, it defuses it.
Wordox is just like Scrabble, but everyone plays from 7 common tiles displayed at the bottom. Whenever you play tiles and make a word, you get the points, but if someone plays tiles and uses your tiles, then you lose that tile. For instance, if you play 'find' and the next player makes it into 'finding' you lose the points for that word and the other player gets the points. The first one to 30 wins. It's a tough game.
There are word searches, crosswords, Word Yacht(Yachtzee), anagrams, hangman, Enigma (a crypto game), and even a game to improve your typing speed called 'Speedy Racer.'
Anyone who enjoys word games will love this game! It's easy to learn and fun to play. It can be played over and over because every game is different.
One of the things I really like about Hoyle's games is the facemaker part of it. You can create your own player and make your own face. What I like most is that you can use the same face for each of their games. If you made a face for Casino, you could use it in Word Games, Board Games and Card games if you wanted to. Or you could change them everytime.
This game is fairly inexpensive also, only coming it at about $20. It's definitely worth it, and I would actually pay up to $30 for it.
