KCFemme's Full Review: Hoyle Word Games 2000 for Windows
I picked this game up at SAMS Wholesale Club for a whopping $9.99. Boy was it worth it! I love word games, and so do my children. And Hoyle has released a product that keep us all busy!
Installation - Setting up the Word Games was very simple. Throw the disk in the cd drive and off it goes. If you would like to see a sample of some of the other games they have you can choose to install those also. However, even running on a PIII 700, each demo install took another 5 minutes. And they really aren't all that great. So I would definitely recommend just installing the game, and leaving the demo's alone.
Setting Up Your Player - When you first go into Hoyle Word Games, set up your player. You can even design your face, hair color, shapes of your eyes, nose, and mouth, your clothing design and even if you wear glasses. This part is almost as much fun as playing the game itself!
Anagrams - How many words can you make out of OENCUS? In this game you are trying to help a monkey get to a banana. You do this by making as many words with the letters given as possible. But be careful, you can repeat any of the letters.
Crosswords - This is exactly what you would expect. It is a crossword puzzle. In each of the games you can customize it to how you want to play. Including the background music.
Double-Cross - This is my favorite of all the games on this disk. It is very similar to Scrabble but has some extras added in. Ever want to bomb some of your opponents letters to make room for your own words? Well now you have the chance!
Speedy Racer - This is a typing skills game. In one of the versions the big, bad wolf is trying to bomb the three little pigs houses. You can save them by typing the letters that are dropped. It will get fast though, so be prepared to type fast!
Word Searches - Just like the crosswords, this is just what you expect. Nothing fancy, just a list of words and a box of mixed up letters. Go find them!
Hangman - Just how many years has it been since you have played this kids game? Guess your letters, if you miss, you get a piece of the hangman's body. Guess well though, you only have 6 chances.
Enigma - This is probably the most difficult of all the games. They give you a sentence and all the letters are scrambled. (i.e. all the T's show as J's) Based on the sentence (and probably a few good guesses) you can start changing letters around to make the sentence read properly. I've never won on this one yet. :-(
Word Yacht - This is similar to the game of Yahtzee ... Roll the dice which have letters on them and start to spell as many words as you can. Ok, so it sounds like Boggle, well it is that too. Except when you score your "boggle" words you actually score them like in Yahtzee.
Overall This has definitely been a game that has held the attention of not only myself, but my children too. So when you are finished being serious for the day, and ready to just have some fun, pop in the Hoyle Word Games disk and go for it!
