| dtseng1969's Full Review: Hughes HR10-250 (250 GB) 200-Hours Video Recorder |
I've gotta admit, I didn't do a lot of research before I bought this unit. But I still love it. Great looking HD recordings. Seamless and smooth fast forward (3 speeds, no sound on any speed), rewind (3 speeds), slow motion (only one speed), and pause.
Yes, it records TWO channels at the same time in HD!!! It's no lie. Plus, you can even record two channels and watch a previously recorded program, all at the same time! All in HD! (I'm not prone to exclamations, and I'm not easily impressed with h/w, but this unit really impresses me).
Comments about Glen Hamilton's excellent review:
1. Yes, it is expensive. But you get what you pay for: 2 HD satellite tuners (cost you around $300/ea), TIVO recording (for both tuners, $50/ea). That's $700, and don't forget, the TIVO is in HD. What's that worth to you? It's in one box, too.
2. Yep, Harmony remotes are the best. The remote that comes with this unit is below average: it doesn't have backlighting and it is poorly balanced for reaching the number keys and the all-important "Back (channel return)" button (on the bottom of the remote).
3. Menus. There are two channel guide/menu systems: the slow one that Glen writes of (and it is sloooow!) and a much, much faster streamlined guide that I like better anyway. The guide system can be changed in the 'settings' menu. The second, non-default, guide is semi-transparent and it displays channels/shows on the left side of the screen while displaying upcoming shows of the currently highlighted channel on the right side of the screen. Very nice.
4. Best Buy Price, we were able to get $300 knocked off the price of a package with a Panasonic EDTV 42" plasma.
5. Noise, as an audiophile, I find the fan and hard-drive noise to be annoyingly loud, but acceptable when my cabinet is closed. In movies or rock music, the noise is not a factor.
Even in a closed cabinet with a DVD player and Xbox running, the unit stays moderately warm and never gets alarmingly hot.
