Pros: Dependable. Useful. Portable. Practical. Fun!
Cons: Mwave modem difficult to work with. Hard to find drivers for it.
The Bottom Line: Great dependable laptop. Outdated, I think a 760CD (or any of the 700 series) would still be good for light WP and internet/email.

What a dependable little laptop this was! I bought it while in 9th grade (1998), used, from a friend. I was suddenly the envy of all my friends, cause I had a laptop and they didn't. AH, memories...
But seriously, this was a such a dependable laptop. According to specs, it had a average batt. life of 3 hours, but I'd swear more like four and a half.
It had a 'pixi-stick' mouse device...at least that's what I've always heard them called. Its a button in the center of the KB and you use it to move the pointer with your finger. Quite nice, since I personally HATE trackpads. If this thing had come with a trackpad, I would have seriously brought a mouse wherever I went.
The color screen was bright and easy to read. The CD-ROM was fast enough for its time and for a 90Mhz computer, it ran Windows 98, Office 97, and some games quite well. I never had any sort of problem with speed or running out of RAM (I had 64 megs).
The hard drive, battery, floppy, and cd-rom were so easy to remove and the inside of the laptop was easy to re-configure. I had a 3Com 10bt/33.6 modem PCMCIA card for networking and the computer was even used at one point for our computer club server (running NetBSD, of course)! It ran non stop 24/7 with no problems whatsoever. RAM was easily accessable as well, though I never removed it.
It had an Mwave Soundchip/33.6 modem. I had plenty of problems (connection and compatability issues mostly) with this and got a PCMCIA card instead for a modem. The modem part I had problems with, but the sound chip worked great! I never had a problem with it at all but I've read horror stories on ThinkPad support boards about problems with Mwave stuff...well, worked mostly fine for me.
I'm sure this laptop would still be going strong today, if not for an unfortunate fall it took...6 feet onto concrete. Ever defiant, it worked for about six months afterwards. All the while the case falling away in large chunks. I still carried it around with me and had it held together with duct-tape at one point. It began to have problems of various types after the fall - power issues, frequent crashes, sound card cutting out, etc. To make a long story short, it died, but died honorably.
I'm surprised it worked at all after its fall...most laptops that I've heard of wont function after a serious, uhm, impact. Well, chalk it up to IBM strength and reliability.
I don't hold the performance after the fall against it, though. In my opinion, it was a great laptop.
