triple_irons's Full Review: I Was An Atomic Mutant! for Windows
I actually liked this game and played it more than any other sane person might. But, even a person as easily amused as myself could only take the smashing, stomping, and destruction to level 40 (for each monster) before boredom finally got to me.
You may take your pick of 4 mutants.
A giant woman She-Beast who can scream the airplanes out of the sky, pick up cars, tanks, cacti, billboards, people, cattle, and throw them, she can kick and punch buildings to rubble, and can shoot lazers from her eyes. She's kinda sexy to boot. "Puny humans, you will pay for your atomic misdeeds."
A Godzilla type monster, Reptomicus who can breath fire or shoot fireballs, bash structures vehicles and people by whipping around his tail. He has an awesome atomic bite. I normally just lay on the fire breath for continuous destruction. He also has the ability to throw vehicles etc, and eat people for extra fun. "Prepare to face the horror you have awakened in the desert."
The giant Alien Robot with three mechanical arms has a death ray, a whiplash attack, an X-bash, X-cannon (for long range destruction) and also has the ability to throw vehicles, signs, and people etc. "You will rue the day you intruded into dimension X."
Lastly there is a giant BrainFrom Beyond Infinity. It's arsenal consists of a psi blast, a psi punch, a psi whomp, a psi fling (for throwing items) and a really cool Insanity Ray which turns people, tanks, and planes into giant ducks and bunnies disabling their attack while giving you time to deal with them. "Your small minds will be driven mad with fear."
Use your mouse scroll to choose weapon, and left mouse click activates.
Power ups to increase health, power, and one for invincibility appear after certain buildings are smashed throughout the levels, and if you die, you go back to the game menu to start from the beginning after a dramatic cut scene of your death.
The graphics and FX are pretty cool for this throwback. You can even play in black and white mode. The music is certainly B movie quality, and some of the things the people say while you are attacking is quite funny. "Steve, where's Steve?" and a woman shouting, "Shoot it, just shoot it!" and "I think I left the stove on!" among others.
Hit your spacebar during gameplay (or right click mouse) to switch from fullscreen to "Canopy Vision" and you will be in the audience as such, watching the drive-in movie screen. it's a little harder to get your creatures bearings, a little disorienting, but cool.
You can adjust screen display, controls, and sounds from the menu, view credits, and a cool little black and white intro movie.
You get a power meter, a might meter (health) and a destructo-meter which is filled to complete the level. You may either play "Arcade" or go to the "Monster" levels. There is no mission or any real objective in either mode other than to destroy all the buildings, much like the old Atari Rampage game, but this is much more fun, and full of campy sci-fi action.
The number of buildings to destroy increase on each level up to level thirty, after which it's like starting the destruction on level one all over again ...huge letdown.
There is a 1.1 patch available online which adds a few new modes and fixes. (download.com search)
There's really not much else, and it does get boring after playing enough levels, but I really enjoy this game's added quirks, (people and vehicles even bounce up and down when you stomp towards them) and it's been on my desktop for more than 3 years and I still play it every now and then. Additionally, once you install the game, you don't need the disc to play, but without the cd, you won't get the cool B Movie music. Next to Deer Avenger 4 it's the best 20 dollars I ever spent on a game.
