Pros: Great sound and image quality
Cons: VHS side swallows tapes, not usable
The Bottom Line: Avoid this unit if playing VHS is important. Kids can't operate VHS side. Swallows tapes. Not reliable

I should have realized when the first unit we bought went back within the 30-day grace period that this is a poor unit at best. First some good stuff: very helpful technical staff, or I should say very polite. Excellent sound and picture quality on the DVD side.
However, the VHS keeps getting tapes jammed inside and I have to pry them back out. This started a few months after we bought the unit. I specifically bought this product to edit VHS C family videos and then transfer to DVD.
At first, the VHS to DVD transfer functions worked great with easy editing and nice on line menus; manual easy to read and understand. But not being able to operate the VHS means I now have to go buy a separate VHS player to watch VHS. What a drag. We basically have to rent movies only on DVD or on demand. We don't use VHS that often but the kids have a hefty VHS library and we have to reacquire them on DVD or get a new VHS player.
Also, the DVDs I burned down from this unit won't play any where else in the house. Somehow I have to find someone to transfer these family movie DVDs to DVDs that will play on other units, which means I will probably have to have a professional shop transfer the data while using my DVD player, and in turn it means having no DVD player for a few days.
It was probably too much to ask of one unit in this price range that it would play and edit VHS and DVDs accurately, but that was the marketing hook I swallowed.
