Pros: Few
Cons: Lots
The Bottom Line: I truly regret having purchased this VCR. My advice, spend some more money and buy one of JVC’s moderately-priced S-VHS models such as the HR-S5901U or HR-S5900U.

| richreiss2's Full Review: JVC HR-J692U VHS VCR |
I purchased the HR-J692U from Sears about six weeks ago. I had a JVC HR-S5400U S-VHS VCR that worked fine for four years until the moving company dropped it down a flight of stairs. I thought that I no longer had any need for recording in S-VHS mode, but I did want to be able to play back my S-VHS tapes. The J692U does that in Super VHS Quasi playback mode.
Good things about the HR-J692U.
1. It is lightweight. The sharpness and color in SP mode is very good.
2. It has an S-VHS output, but see below.
3. It will play S-VHS using Super VHS Quasi playback. Emphasis on the word Quasi.
Bad things about the HR-J692U.
1. The front AV jack housing is flimsy. It flexes too much when inserting RCA plugs.
2. There is no rear AV jack. I am forced to plug cables into the unsightly front AV jacks.
3. Fast Forward and Rewind are horrible to use in EP mode. When the stop button is pushed, the tape goes several minutes beyond the point where you pushed stop.
4. There is no memory function.
5. There is no battery backup. A power fluctuation of less then half-a-second will erase the time, program set and more. I have to keep my VCR plugged into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS backup) that I would normally use with a computer.
6. The RF output is pre-programmed to channel 3. There is no manual switch for the channel. If you set the output to channel 4 and the power goes out, the channel reverts to 3. It is very difficult to reset.
7. The express timer program feature is no time saver. My thumb gets sore punching the buttons to advance or go back.
The VCR also makes a very audible rubbing sound when recording in EP mode.
