Pros: Ease of set-up and use, plus great playback quality!
Cons: Lightweight, no-frills unit for simple everyday use only.
The Bottom Line: For the money, a good everyday S-VHS unit which does everything it claims to do!

| moviejs's Full Review: JVC HR-S2902E S-VHS VCR |
Sometimes I'm mystified by the negative reviews seen on this site. This machine does exactly what it claims to do, perfectly, and does it for $84.00-delivered from Vann's. I ordered one of these JVCs to simply playback S-VHS and VHS tapes to my DVD recorder, mainly because of other JVCs I've had, and the fact that this unit has 'active video calibration' and 'picture control - soft, sharp, auto' which allow me to slightly alter the playback picture quality of my (very) old videos. The unit has simple manual buttons for the usual functions on the front, S-video out in the rear, S-video in in the front for your camcorder, a simplified remote that's fairly well laid out and plays S-VHS tapes recorded on other machines beautifully. It's easy to use, generates fine digital cable timer recordings, is a snap to setup for all functions and has an easy-to-read owner's manual. I've had no trouble with inserting videos, parts breaking or anything else. Yes, it's a very light unit - the lighter they are, the less they cost to ship - but it's the ease of use leading to the desired end result that matters, and this JVC does the job for me. No bells and whistles as compared to other models, but for simple timer recording and playback of old videos, it works fine.
