Pros: Plays formats that most DVD players wont.
Cons: Format interpretation function slows down or fails occasionally
The Bottom Line: The system works as advertised but I would not rush out and buy another like this

| LuzonTS's Full Review: JVC HR-XVC21U Player |
Christmas time was rolling around and of course the local stores were slashing prices on audio visual equipment. This particular trip I spotted a DVD/VCR combo from JVC for just $100.
Living in Japan, any JVC product that I buy has a lifetime warranty for just about anything that happens to it short of outright neglect.
Set up was a snap through it's RCA ports and standard power plug. Speaking of power, I travel a great deal and need components that have auto-voltage switching features which of course this JVC has.
The DVD plays numerous formats:
DVD
CD
VCD
WMA
MP3
JPG
I found that I could set the JPG playback to function automatically and I could preset the refresh interval.
The system can also play back Fujicolor CD and Kodak picture CD formats.
DVD-ROM, SVCD, CVD and photo CD formats will not work.
PAL and CAM/SECAM formatted discs will not work.
I ran a series a discs through with different formats and have found that the system strictly plays what it states, no more and no less. It was able to recognize the formats it could understand that were mixed in with the ones it could not.
One glitch that I found was that sometimes it took excessively long to read the discs. It would on occasion not recognize discs that had programs it was supposed to be able to read.(I later discovered that CD-R's and RW's could not be played back depending on the recording conditions) I found that if I turned off the system then turned it back on it usually worked fine.
My next check was the VHS player which functioned just fine. Even old tapes which tended to play poorly on older players played well on this one.
My final ops check was to see if the DVD copied to VHS tape. I found that the function only worked for some DVDs.
It also has a Karaoke function that I found to be substandard compared to dedicated Karaoke Platforms like some Pioneers that I have seen and own.
The remote control takes a few minutes getting used to and is somewhat user friendly.
Some of the other specs and features:
Audio Outputs/Inputs Coaxial, RCA, DTS Video Outputs Composite, S-Video and Surround Sound Dolby Digital
Setting up the system takes a little bit of time but is not difficult.
Recommended:
Yes
Amount Paid (US$): 100.00
