| dot4f's Full Review: JVC XV-N50 DVD Player |
WOW, what a player!
I had an older Sony DVD player prior to this The Sonys confusing remote, ability to only read DVD and CDS NO CDRs or anything else, and poor interface left me unsatisfied.
So, I went to Best Buy and looked at every DVD players box. This seemed to be the only DVD player they sold that had WMA \ MP3 \VCD \ SVCD Support.
So, naturally, I was sold, and now it sits nestled in with my TV.
The remote is nice enough, it controls the TV and DVD player even has an eject button like the Sony did.
My biggest gripe and reason for leaving the Sony at the curb is that it would constantly skip if the disk was even the slightest bit dirty \ scratched. It doesnt seem so bad, but unlike a normal CD Player, it would end up going back to the beginning of the DVD, which then makes you que it up to where you left off again (annoying) and most of the time, it would just skip again!
The JVC has a very inviting menu, a super clear blue. The remote makes total sense, UP \ DOWN \ LEFT \ RIGHT Enter in center (someone has a brain)
I just burned my first SVCD CDROM (you can copy DVDs to CDRs and play them in this DVD player)
The DVD player is loaded with outputs for Audio, digital, optical, you name it - it's got it. Typical S-Video and Component, as well as Composite.
I only dislike that it's a JVC, it doesn't match any of my other electronics, and it probably will have more difficulty working with universal remotes than my other stuff does.
Ill be bringing you an update on this player, but the initial outlook is very promising, I think Im going to really enjoy having this player.
Now, maybe you're not sold on this DVD player -- but I think I can help a little bit with this.
Go to your local electronics retailer.
Start by turning off every dvd player they sell.
Then, go around, and quickly press the eject button on each one.
Watch! Some DVD players will take over 30 seconds for the tray to simply eject. Do you want to be bent over at your house, waiting for the silly tray to come out, so you can watch that movie you just took home from Blockbuster: NO.
The JVC ejects IMMEDIATELY when you press the eject button. There is no reason why other players need to take 30 seconds to preform this simple task, yet they do!
Another nice feature, the player has a fast forward at 1.5x speed. This allows you to watch a movie at almost normal speed -- with audio. The great thing is, if you are pressed for time, you can watch a a 60 min episode in 45 min.
One downside of the remote, is the switch from DVD to TV. It's a physical toggle and you HAVE to move it to adjust the volume of the TV, and then back again to DVD to pause the DVD player. Just a little annoying, but I've gotten use to it now.
When this player was released, it was known as the fastest DVD player to start playing a disk from the point of inserting the disk (I believe they quoted something like 8 seconds) --and it lives up to this, again look at other DVD players, and you will see just how long they can take to start playing a disk.
Also, at the time, this was the thinnest dvd player sold.
The tray seems a bit flimsy, but I don't see it ever breaking off, unless you hang on it or something out of order.
I must say this one more time, this dvd player does a great job of playing dirty, scratched disks. When you get DVDs from blockbuster, I swear those disks are so abused. This player does not care. It plays then just fine, and in the rare occasion that it is too bad to play, it usually just pixelates a bit, as opposed to starting over from the menu, or skipping several scenes away.
This player isn't the newest player, but it still offers all the important features, and it does everything very well. A+ player
