| soupcraze's Full Review: JVC XV-N50 DVD Player |
The JVC XV-N50 is a lower-end DVD player offered by JVC. This unit caught my eye while I was at Best Buy, it's very sleek looking, and I do like the black color job. Well I decided to buy it and then later return it. Today, there are many DVD players that offer so many features including progressive scan that go for under $100. I've tried Sony, Panasonic, and now it was time to see how JVC would hold up.
-Price-
*The JVC XV-N50 goes for around $80 on the internet. That is pretty cheap compared to the higher-end market. However, this player doesn't perform like a piece of junk, it's superb. The closest competition that I think it gets is from the Panasonic DVD-S35. Both are very respectable brands, and they both have excellent products. If you're an average consumer here and not so worried about everything, then I guess it may come down to personal preference as to whether you like the black color scheme of the JVC XV-N50 or the silver finish of the Panasonic DVD-S35. Both have excellent picture quality and are progressive scan. The JVC XV-N50 is yet one of those products where it's in the "You can't go wrong with this price" category.
-Features-
*Here's comes the nice part of the JVC XV-N50. It has CD/DVD/MP3 playback. It plays back every kind of disc whether it's a CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and photo CD. Whew! That's quite a lot that you can play there, especially for the price! The MP3 feature may make this unit more worthy than a CD player since a CD with MP3s can hold a lot more than a normal track CD. The remote is nicely laid out and the unit proves itself to be easy to use. Also, the outputs on the JVC XV-N50 allow for excellent picture quality on the TV screen.
-Picture Quality-
*The JVC XV-N50 offers intense picture quality. It's suprising to see that DVD players have come down to such a low price yet are capable of performing magnificently! This is a progressive scan unit, and when coupled with a TV that uses component video inputs, brace yourself for some excellent picture quality! You get a whole lot of picture quality with this player, don't be fooled by the low price. The JVC XV-N50 has better picture quality than the DVD players of yesteryears which back then didn't have as many features such as progressive scan and what not.
-Inputs & Outputs-
*The I/Os on the JVC XV-N50 make it incredibly versatile. It has what you'd expect, component video out including. Also, there are outputs for both TOSLINK and digital coaxial cable which sends out digital signals to the A/V receiver such as Dolby Digital and DTS. Then if you're stuck without a receiver, just use composite sound out and best possible video connection, or use it all. It's all easy, and therefore all good!
-The Verdict-
*The JVC XV-N50 is in a price range where you really can't go wrong... Well, sure there are crappy players out there, but the JVC XV-N50 isn't one of them. JVC is a respectable brand, and does make high-quality products. If you want a lot of features and performance for the money, then this is the player you're looking for. You're not going to find much difference between this and that large brand competitors such as those from Sony and Panasonic, but if you're not a fan of the silver finishes, then you can keep it black with the JVC XV-N50. Overall, you do get what you pay for, and even more.
