| naphtalia's Full Review: Jack Daniels 'Old No.7' Whiskey |
Jasper "Jack" Daniels set up his distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee to take advantage of the town's clear spring water without the iron traces that is prevalent in other natural springs. His Tennessee whiskey is made more unique by being filtered through maple wood charcoal for a week. The filtering gives the whiskey a full, rich flavor.
Following the filtering, Jack Daniels is stored and aged in barrels. It is this part of the process in which it gains its amber color and loses a lot of its burn. Jack Daniels was a master whiskey maker. While he is long gone, his recipe and process for making his whiskey hasn't changed. It's a slow process, but the result is a wonderfully drinkable whiskey.
I like the taste of Jack Daniels straight. It is smoky with a hint of something vanilla-y. It is mildly floral without being perfume-y. I have friends who insist it is a natural mixer with cola drinks. Interestingly, most of the folks I know who drink it this way think it works better with diet Coke than with regular Coke. Go figure! If I'm going to mix it with something, I like it in hot coffee with a little honey or brown sugar, and a splash of sweet cream - not whipped cream which seems too froo-froo-ey to me.
I personally like baking with Jack Daniels. It has a natural affinity when cooking with nuts. I've been known to make a pecan brittle that includes Jack Daniels. I've also used it in recipes for baked apples or for sauces to go over pound cakes.
Some folks will tell you that Jack Daniels is the worlds best whiskey. It certainly is popular. At this time, it's sold in over 130 countries world wide. I do have other whiskeys that I prefer, but for an affordable and delicious drink, Jack Daniel's is a great way to go.
If you make it to Tennessee, it's worth a trip to Lynchburg to tour the distillery. The tour is fantastic. The guides who take you through clearly are proud and passionate about the product, and are excited to share the history of the place. They're also incredibly funny.
When I drink whiskey, I like mine in a small brandy type snifter. I like the way that glass allows me to concentrate on the aromas. I also like the way my drink swirls in the glass. Others, I know prefer their Jack Daniels in a highball glass. However you like yours, don't take it as a shot. Drink it in a way that will let you appreciate what you have - an American classic.
