Mrsfitts's Full Review: Joy by Jean Patou 1.5oz Eau De Perfume Spray for W...
About 30 years ago I embarked on a quest for the perfect scent. Little did I know that the perfect scent for me had been created as a gift to women in 1930 by Jean Patou.
Joy by Jean Patou
Stories on the Internet have it that during the Great Depression, Jean Patou created Joy for women, blue because they could no longer afford his expensive clothes, and he wanted to bring a little Joy into their dreary lives. This story, read through the eyes of a former Yuppie, doesn't ring quite true. How can you create the costliest perfume in the world for women going through the Great Depression? Excuse me Biff, we're going to lay off the help and send our kids to public school so you can buy me the most costliest scent in the world! I'm not buying it. I do believe that Joy is the costliest perfume in the world to make or buy, not that it was designed to help the women suffering from not being able to buy Haute Couture during the Great Depression. People, broke during the Great Depression, were worried about how they would live, not how they would smell. I could be wrong. I wasn't born for almost another 30 years. Presentism skews how we see things.
That aside, for me, Joy is the ultimate in perfumes. It truly is a gift, in a world full of overpowering "watermelon" or "sour apple" scents. It is not too subtle like the clean scent of L'Air du Temps. And it is not too strong like Tea Rose or Opium. Joy is a light, feminine scent of spicy floral.
My favorite flower scent is carnation. Joy has the spiciness of the carnation scent, but with the uplifting scent of rose, jasmine and tuberose. I have grown all three of these flowers for their scents, there's nothing like a spring morning when the jasmine and orange blossoms are in bloom at the same time. In the summer, roses during the day and tuberoses at dusk create a heady smell. Add all this into a light fragrance and one gets a very romantic scent, perfect for those special nights when dancing a waltz or gazing out over the side of an ocean liner.
Perfume Trivia
Joy comes in many different types.
Parfum: This is the strongest concentration of oil with less alcohol content. Parfum is also the most expensive. Average scent lasting time is 5 to 7 hours.
Eau de Parfum: This is a slightly lighter concentration of oil to alcohol. A small percentage of water is also added. Also EDP is slightly less expensive than Parfum. Average scent lasting time is under 5 hours.
Eau de Toilette: has less than 1/3 the oil that Parfum does, with 80% alcohol content and 10 to 15% water content. EDT scents are much lighter than Parfum and EDP, and usually last only 3 hours.
Joy also comes in body lotion, body cream, shower lotion and solid perfume.
My Recommendations
Sellers recommend Joy for evenings or romantic occasions. I like the light, spicy scent so much that I use the Joy Eau de Toilette for daytime use, and the Joy Eau de Parfum for romantic evening use. The EDT is light enough to give me subtle wafts of the spicy floral scent, but not going to let my coworkers know where I was 10 minutes ago like some very overpowering scents. (or is that overbearing scent users?) If youre not standing with your nose nuzzling my neck, youre not likely to know that I have Joy EDT on.
Conclusion: If youre a woman who likes a subtle, spicy fragrance, get your special someone to give you some Joy. My husband gives me Joy!
