MzRizz's Full Review: Juntos Otra Vez by Juan Gabriel/Rocio Durcal
If ever there was a reunion CD, that features fabulous Mariachi music, and a perfect melding of two voices, it is this double CD of Mexican superstar singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel and the velvety voice of Rocio Durcal
Gabriel has an impressive career that began when he was writing songs at 13. He comes from a family that sang and danced all the time, and he said he believed all families were the same. Today, Gabriel is one of the worlds most successful Latin singers, influencing many including this co-singer. He has an amazing songwriting catalog and numerous hits.
Like many artists, he too, endured an eight-year battle with his record company over his music. Therefore, in 1986 he stopped recording albums. The conflict resolved and here he is to grace us with this musical style.
No other voice resembles that of Juan Gabriel. Whether he does ballads, rancheras, or mariachi. Sometimes there is a slight hoarseness to the voice. To top that voice, the man has an amazing songwriting catalog.
His partner again, Rocio Durcal also has an enjoyed a career in movies and in 1977 she recorded 10 compositions written by Juan Gabriel, as he was her influence. So beautiful is their duet hit El Destino (The Destiny.) It is a beautiful love ballad so brilliantly composed by Gabriel and to hear them sing it is just incredible. Another emotional slower ballad is Dos Favores, you can just hear the emotional and passionate voices. Que Bonito es Santa Fe is fast, fun and with a danceable rhythm.
I can't express how wonderful this double collection is. It is non-stop entertaining. Titled, Juntos Otra Vez , it means together again. The double CD was out in 1997. The performance was taped in Mexico on June 24, 1999 at Teatro Degolado de Guadalajara Jalisco. Catch this on videotape also, it is a masterpiece. It features mariachi music, dancers, and the two, Rocio and Juan, together for an extraordinary event in Mexican music history.
Known as the best mariachi band in Mexico, Mariachi Vargas, provides the music and on some instruments, is the mariachi band El Mariachi de Mi Tierra.
It was the television special that drew me to this fabulous entertaining event that was so true to the Mexican traditions. Rocio takes her turn at few solos as does Juan, but the magic sparks when they duet so harmonically and with class. Her voice is soft and powerful at the same time. Juntos is danceable, and fun, the core of the event. The music is lively with traditional mariachi sounds plus more. A versatile mixture is present. It is fun with fabulous music. If you like traditional mariachi music and two great voices, pick this. ....MzRizz
