Rock Out and Jam to jWIN's JXM3 AM/FM Portable Radio!

Written: Jun 18 '06 (Updated Jun 21 '06)
Pros:Good sound [w/other headphones], arm strap and belt clip, good reception, face dialing
Cons:Terrible earbuds, Battery life
The Bottom Line: jWIN's JXM3 is a great radio with good features, a durable design, and a price that's literally unbeatable. What more could you want?

Last year (though not discontinued BTW), I bought the JXM3 Portable Radio at Ross Dress for Less. I normally go here for...nope wrong...I normally go here for electronics because they have the cheapest low-end stuff you can find. I think the lowest after it would be the dollar store, no, not Family Dollar, the 99 cents only store. Anyhow, I found this in the bunch. I didn't really have a use for it but it was really cheap (I think it was like $3) and could probably find a use for it. All of the features work just fine as on the box. The only negative I've found with it is that it's battery life can be pretty weak on continued use (about 8 hours on alkaline). The last negative are the cheap earbuds but that's expected for the very low price.

jWIN JXM3 Radio
While it's only $3, I did find a lot of features on it. Firstly, it has a belt clip. This is something that I don't see on 90% of CD players out today so this was a really nice feature and I was really suprised at how strong it was. It has an arm strap but I personally prefer belt clips since the risk of the radio slipping off the arm strap when running or even in the house is very high. It also has a neck strap but to me that becomes uncomfortable after awhile. It has a face tuning dial...therefore it is analog but the numbers are really big-this makes it really easy to see what station you're on when you have it on belt clip. One good thing I applaud jWIN on the design is that the volume control and the AM/FM switch(while sadly analog) are on the side so they aren't flipping up and down if you decide to have it on the strap or clip. It comes with a bass boost system that improves sound quality which is suprising for the cost.

Sound Quality
Firstly, when you open up the player, you're probably better off throwing away the earbuds when you first get them. They're equivalent to what you get at for 99 cents only. If you do use a good set of headphones you can get a nice sound quality out of it. The bass boost adds a nice richness to the music so you should just leave it there. Most of the music sounded just fine but of course it depends on the headphones you have. MAKE SURE you get another set of headphones when buying this if you don't already have one for it, all your music will sound flat and lifeless if you don't.

Ease of Use
Overall the JXM3 is far more than easy to use. All you have to do is pop a couple of batteries in, tune to your station, plug in some headphones, and you're just fine.

Portability
Of course as shown on the picture, this is a pretty small little radio that's probably small enough to fit into your own pocket if you wished. I wouldn't since thw volume could get pushed but it is a small little radio, no problems there.

Reception Quality
Overall I was pretty impressed with the reception this little radio could actually pick up. It picked up some stations my Sony system had trouble with (not anymore since I bought a huge antenna for it). It picked up all of my locals pretty nicely and only had fuzz on a few stations but could be fixed when I moved the wire.

Battery Life
Here's where things might get dissappointing. The radio takes AAA batteries and if I was the designer of this radio I would use AA batteries instead. You can only get around 7-8 hours on this thing so don't expect to get tons of battery life with it. If it used AA batteries I'm sure it would last much longer.

Durability
Now this is something that's nice--while it's very cheap--this radio is very durable. I think if someone smashed it to a wall it would still be in good or at worst ok standing. This radio is really worth the $3 just on this alone. This would make it great for kids that lose/destroy stuff easily, they'll probably still get a heck of a lot of time out of this.

Price
At Ross I paid only $3 for it and I think it's worth the low price. I got a decent radio with good sound quality, a belt clip, good reception, good design, and durability.

Warranty
jWIN warrants this product free of defects in workmanship for a period of 90 days. Like I say in a lot of my reviews, if something is immediately defective, you're better off getting an exchange/refund where you bought it rather than sending it to the company you got it from (which might not even give you an exchange or refund). Only if the store warranty is over should you give it back to the company.

The Bottom Line
The bottom line is this...for $3 this is one hell of a radio. You get really good sound from it (at least with good headphones), you get a belt clip that's already pre-attached, you get very good reception, you get a long lasting player, and a price that can't really be beat. I'm sure this would make a good radio for anyone. It's of good quality, has a lot of features, and low in cost. In my eyes I think this would be best for kids--it's pretty durable and even if it does break, I'm sure anyone can fork out another $3. If you are looking for a cheap radio that has a lot of features and is of good quality, I think jWIN wins with this one.
