| armandhammer8's Full Review: KLH 9250B Main / Stereo Speaker |
Do not be fooled by the brand or price of these speakers, I assure you the performance is top notch. At $100 a pair (BestBuy) there is no better deal to speak of. The sound is crisp, clean, and deep in a way high end speakers are.
I bought these while browsing through a BestBuy looking at Yamaha, Cerwin-Vega, and Bose Speakers. I normally avoid KLH because they are cheap but I heard someone testing them and I was impressed. The others (yamaha and bose) sounded good as they are expected to, but I never imagined the cheap KLH speakers would out perform them on many levels.
The first level in which the KLH is superior is in efficiency. You can attach them to a 5 watt minisystem and they will be content. All frequencies will be present with no distortion. Try this with a Bose speaker and you will soon discover it needs more than 5 watts to operate seamlessly.
The second level in which KLH is superior is balance. Unlike The bassy Cerwin-Vega's or the Tinny Yamaha's, these speakers emphasise each frequency exactly how the musician intended it . Thats not to say these speakers can't deliver the bass (I'll cover that latter), just that the Bass or Treble never becomes overpowering. It seems like every thing falls into place where it belongs, loud or deep as it needs to be. These KLH's posses that difficult to achieve balanced "just right" sound. An admirable achievement for such an inexpensive speaker.
Finally, the third level in which these KLH's are superior is bass response. The base pours very naturally out of the 12" woofers almost knocking you in the chest. You can feel the music in a way, which not even the Cerwin-Vega's can rival. The bass is very clean and tight when necessary while loose and liquidy when asked to be. Few speakers in this price bracket (or any under $400) can rival the accuracy and balance of the bass.
Now, there are a couple more aspects to finding great speakers. One being the "live" factor and the other the clearity and accuracy of the Mid-range driver.
First the live factor- When played at a mid or high volume these speaker create an illusion of being front row center at a concert. Not just in the placement of the sound, but also depth and feel of it. You can hear and feel the guitar strumming and picking like the band is playing in your living room. A crash of the symbols can send chills up your spine like it was live. All this creates a pleasing listening experience compelling you to listen to music longer and more often.
Second is the Mid-range driver- The mid-range driver honestly looks and feels cheap. I am suprised the vocals and instramentals sound so life like and accurate when this speaker seems so artificial and cheap. Irrespective, the mid-range sounds excellent bridging the gap between the fantastic tweeter and woofer seamlessly.
If you are on a budget or just looking for a great pair of speakers, go to Best buy and give these a solid audition. Maybe you will change your mind about ckeap speakers and KLH quality too.
