| hyperlexis's Full Review: KLH R5100 5.1 Channels Receiver |
The model has many features going for it and I bought mine at a 5 a.m. after Thanksgiving sale -- it was a huge bargain at $99 with rebates. HOWEVER, I also had a problem with the sound output -- I bought an optical cable to hook up to my KLH brand DVD player (That was $19.95 on sale with rebate...) and used the unit in digital optical mode. The receiver would emit a steady, low level hiss from the two rear surround speakers when using the digital optical setting. It was extremely annoying and it shouldnt have been doing that. In analog mode with the regular patch cables there was no noise, but the sound with the optical cable should have been perfect.
So, I took the unit back to Best Buy -- what a nightmare. First they said that because I didnt buy their service contract, I would have to ship it to the manufacturer myself. Then they offered to send it for diagnosis to the Best Buy service center for $25, and then on to the manufacturer if need be. Then the computer said that no, these units were not allowed to be shipped to Best Buy's repair center, and that I had to send the unit to the manufacturer myself.
Then I got the manager. He offered to replace it with an identical unit, but they had none, however they did have some other good units for more money. (It turns out they did have the same unit on the sales floor.)
However, he recommended against getting the same unit because he said it was not the best quality. So, they had a Pioneer unit on sale for about $50 more, but it was a much better unit he said. Then, after searching for one in the back stock room they couldnt find any. By this time about an hour had elapsed.....
After going back and forth trying to find another brand receive that was actually in stock I just gave up and bought one of the newer KLH receivers the R7000 6.1 unit. It cost me another $70.
Problem solved, no noise from the speakers in optical mode. I just hope it lasts longer than a week! It only has a 90 day warranty, and is made in China by this place called Hip Shing electronics. Who knows.....
