Pros: Small, quiet, dual temp zones, quality Kenmore brand name.
Cons: Could be too small for some people, so do research before buying.
We recently purchased this freezer from the local Sears (only place you can get Kenmore brand). We narrowed our choice down to this one by doing research online. We know we wanted a chest style freezer versus the upright for personal reasons. And we needed it to be small enough to fit in the corner of our kitchen.
After using this unit for a while, I have really grown to like it. The top compartment is your standard chest freezer storage area. It does have a basket for organizing smaller items. But the nice feature on this unit is the pull out drawer in the lower half. The drawer and the top storage area have separate temp zones. They are not each controllable individually, but the drawer section is automatically kept slightly less cold then the top section. This allows you to keep meats and other items you want frozen very cold in the top, yet lets you store items like ice cream in the bottom. The ice cream will stay softer, rather then becoming hard as a brick in the colder upper area.
On the lower right side of the machine is the control panel. There is a temp dial that ranges from 0-6, along with a power indicator light, and a Fast Freeze switch.
The Fast Freeze switch over rides the unit to keep the compressor running constantly, to bring the temperature down to the coldest it can get. This is a nice feature for when you buy a lot of unfrozen food that will be placed in the unit, such as bulk meats. A short time before you put all the food in, such as before you leave for the store, you turn this switch on. The temp will be driven very cold. This allows it to freeze the food faster. The faster it freezes, the fresher it will be when thawed later. Be sure to turn the switch off after putting the food in, or the compressor will constantly run, causing premature wear. I will admit, we rarely use the Fast Freeze feature though.
The warranty is nice too. 1 year parts and labor on the entire thing. Plus a 5 years warranty on the cooling system (all the parts that actually do the cooling work). Also, if the freezer stops working due to warranty related issue, Sears will reimburse you up to $100 of any food that was lost, as long as you report the problem immediately.
To sum it up, this freezer is the perfect size for people with limited space. Its exterior measure approximately 28" deep, 34" tall, and 27" wide. It has 4.8cu ft of storage, so make sure you don't need more room before buying this. The dual temp zones are very nice. And the price is very reasonable at $199 at the time we purchased it.
