I needed a range for a rental unit, and I specifically did not want a ceramic top. However I did want self-cleaning oven racks and drip bowls (porcelain coated, rather than plain steel), and a hidden bake element. This is a rather odd combination as usually only the higher-end ranges have the porcelain racks and drip bowls and the hidden bake element, and these all have ceramic tops. I also wanted to spend less than $400.
The Kenmore 94212 had a net cost of $382 at Sears (regular price is $530 and it was on sale for $450, but when I hesitated and said that I would wait for a better sale they offered me a 20% Kenmore discount plus another 10% off the total, as some sort of associates friend's and family promotion that they were having that night). I also bought a microwave/vent hood unit because with the 28% off it was a good deal on a unit with a higher CFM fan than the cheaper models.
Think carefully about getting a range with the ceramic smooth top. It looks cool, but you must really be dedicated about cleaning it often with the special paste cleaner, and your pots and pans must not be warped at all. I have one in my house, and I don't care for it.
Also, remember that you can bargain at Sears for big ticket items. It's very similar to buying a car where not everyone pays the same, and only naive buyers pay the asking price, even when it's a "sale price" already.
