| happyinohio123's Full Review: Kenmore 15962 / 15964 Top Load Washer |
After nine years with a Frigidaire that was a piece of junk from the beginning (new transmission, drum, and brakes in first year with warranty), this Kenmore Elite is a dream! We purchased it because of the three-speed motor (works less, will last longer, and is quieter), the agitation method, and the fact that it is rated as an energy-saving device (lower electric bills are always welcome). We do two loads of laundry every day, with extra loads for towels and sheets thrown in here and there. I didn't think we needed all those choices on the panel, but I have grown to love them all!
The agitation on this washing machine is incredible! Our clothes are cleaner than they've ever been! If your machine has vertical fins, you will want to be rid of it immediately and trade for this washer.
I didn't think that I would like the "Water Temperature Sensor". (After all, I could adjust my own temperature by turning on the spigot for more or less hot water to mix for the "warm" cycle.) WRONG! Living in the country, we have a deep well, and the water temp coming out of the pipes never hits more than 55 degrees. This sensor is great--when the warm wash cycle begins, the machine makes a very nice temperature for even the darkest of hang-up clothes.
Second Rinse. There's another feature that I thought was useless. Wrong again! It has fixed the problem of towels that never quite rinsed well before and dark-colored clothes that used to come out with soap scum on them.
I also didn't think that I needed the many agitation-speed choices. Oh, boy, was I wrong. The fast/fast is super for whites, jeans, and towels. The normal/fast still does a great job on the bulk of the clothes, agitates them well, but doesn't twist the life out of them.
There is a "hang dry" option that is wonderful! We hang most of our clothes on a line outside, and this really works! Wrinkles have been reduced on those days when there is no breeze!
We've only had the machine a short time, so I haven't been able to try every feature. As for the general running of the machine, the three-speed motor is VERY quiet. In fact, the entire machine is quiet--it's my only "complaint". With my Frigidaire, I could tell--from anywhere in the house--where it was in the cycle. It rattled and shook, squeaked and rumbled (and that was since the first day), so that I knew when it was done. We find ourselves often surprised with a washer that's finished and waiting for us! The water fills so quickly into this machine that my laundry time has been reduced by hours each week. The heavy enamelled door (no painted sheet metal here) feels like it's going to last a long time. The white enamel tub has a lifetime warranty.
Our soap use has been cut to LESS THAN HALF! The force of the filling water, and the speed of the agitation, make more suds than I have EVER seen on a washer. Since our well water is hard, we don't see suds very often around here. I started with the same amount of soap that we've always used, and we had to use the "second rinse" all the time! We finally cut to even one third less than the soap mfg recommends (we use powdered All Free), and it's perfect. If the water is particularly hard one day, all I have to do is set it to "fast" agitation for 30 seconds and then return it to "normal". Suds everywhere!
Our clothes are brighter, fluffier, and smell cleaner than ever before. The ultimate test for us? I have some kitchen dishtowels that are old and used during canning season. They have been used so heavily, that they never lost the smell of grease and cast iron. Not anymore! The first time through this washer, and the dirty smell is gone! These towels (and my potholders) smell as clean as our best bath towels!
