Pros: Durable, easy to put together, variable heights
Cons: None except we couldn't get out of the doorway
It was extremely overwhelming as a first time parent to find something as important as a crib for our son - especially since we planned on having him sleep in it, and in his room, from day 1. We spent a lot of time searching, and finally found one that met all of our needs, in the Kinderkraft Vermont Crib - in beech. It looked like a nice crib, was in the color we wanted (and we also purchased the matching dresser in the same color and design from this company), had a nice style to it, and could also be used as a toddler bed. We felt that, for our money's worth, we'd be getting a good value. We paid around $250 for this at Babies R Us, and took it home to assemble.
Assembly I left to my husband - all I did was hold the parts together. It's fairly simple though to attach all the sides and wheels using an Allen wrench (provided) and following the directions. I also like that the website provides directions and care on-line ... we are forever misplacing stuff like that. We put the Kinderkraft Vermont Crib together in our son's bedroom - it rolls well but wouldn't fit through our narrow doors. The finished measurements are L:57-3/4" x W:29" x H:48-1/4" (taken from the site, but are also on the packaging, etc).
Put together the beech color gives off a nice lighter wood color. The design is a little more attractive (to us) than a plain crib, and the sleigh-type ends give it an extra flair, as well as functional use.
Specifics include (taken from the site):
Converts to toddler bed for many years of extended use
Dual action safety locks on drop rail
Multi-position mattress support
Hand selected solid wood construction
Hand applied lacquer finish
From the Manufacturer
The Vermont Crib'n Toddler is a full feature crib that has the added benefit of converting into a toddler bed for many years of continued use. This gives mom and dad the added value of using the same crib, crib mattress, and bedding well into the toddler years. Everything needed for converting the crib is included with your initial purchase except for the mattress. "
The sleigh-type ends give it a more designed feel, and are perfect for hanging an extra blanket or 2 over, possibly tying one of those pull/musical toys to. The crib does not come with a mattress, but Babies R Us had ones available that fit perfectly. The mattress can be left on 3 different heights - and we used all 3. The highest height when he was first born (so we could reach him easily), the middle once he could sit up, etc (so he was no lower and couldn't get out) and the third once we converted the crib to a toddler bed (so he was close to the ground). Though there are wheels our son never moved around all that much, and so the only movement of the crib was done by us.
The Kinderkraft Vermont Crib is easy to raise up and down - though it is designed to be hands-free I still used to hands to lower the crib. Raising it was even easier - it always flowed smoothly and locked securely. The slats are wide and evenly spaced - and they don't move. I have never liked those thin spindley slats that other companies sometimes make.
Once our son was between a 1 1/2 years old and 2 years old, we converted it to the toddler bed. It actually looks more like a day bed - you just take off the wheels, lower the mattress, and take off the front. Since it was his "same crib" our son never thought to "get out of it" even though it was now a bed with an open front. He always stayed put well and never rolled. We took the bed out of his room within a few months though, as he was just getting too long for it, and looked uncomfortable to us.
Taking the crib (well now bed) down was just as easy. Though it lies flat it does take up a good deal of room on our back porch. It is remaining there until we can decide what we want to do with it. The Kinderkraft Vermont Crib still looks in perfect condition, and able to be used again.
We felt like we got a good value from the Kinderkraft Vermont Crib and used it for quite a while. We also felt that our son was safe and secure and we did not have a single problem from this purchase.
