momoften's Full Review: KitchenAid K5SS Heavy Duty Commercial 325 Watts St...
I have owned the Kitchenaid Heavy Duty mixer since 1993, I believe that is the correct year. I got it for a Christmas gift from my husband at a time in our lives when I have no idea how he afforded to buy it. Anyway, it is the one item I would not want to live without. I have a large family (7 kids still at home, 3 out), so this gets a lot of work. It is out at least once a week and more than likely more often.
I use it to make double batches of cookies, bread dough when I don't feel like hand making, double batches of frosting, whipping egg whites, beating batter, whipping potatoes, making whipped cream and so many other things. So, I do use the paddle attachment, the whip and the bread dough hook. I also have many of the other attachments - pasta extruder, grinder, slicer, shredder, etc. I don't use them quite as much. I am thinking about getting the pasta roller and cutter attachment. Also I just purchased a replacement blade that has a rubber scrapper attached to it, love it!
What I love about this mixer is it can get through just about anything you put in the bowl. The pour shield makes getting things into the bowl much easier.
Extras worth investing in are the pour shield, the paddle with the scrapper, and an extra bowl.
About the only challenge is the weight. It is heavy, but that is also an advantage in that it takes a bit more to walk it off the counter. I solved that by purchasing a mat that goes under power tools so they don't walk around.
I haven't used the attachments as much since I have to store them somewhere not as accesible. I suppose I should move them somewhere else and see if I would use them more. I do like that ability to grind my own meat and like I said would be interested in the pasta roller and cutter attachments.
There in lies the only other draw back - the initial investments in the mixer and the attachments. They are expensive, but if you use it as much as I do, I think in the long run it is worth the investment. I am at 15 years and still going. (I would love to have the Professional 600, but this one is still working too well!)
