As said in a comment above, some 600m's have a heat problem. I am not sure what device overheats but it causes the CPU to reduce it's speed in an attempt to control the heat.

Due to this problem, FPS games could be played only for 20-45 minutes unless the room has an air conditioner.

Otherwise the system is great! Only problem is for gamers - it has a very good quality graphics card which is unusable due to heat. Dell does not agree that a problem exists. I have a friend who faced the problem and this review is the third instance where i have noticed the problem.

Hey Scott, if you don't use software that uses the CPU and the hard drive intensively the palm will always remain warm not hot. Also the DVD software works ok but when I installed OTHER DVD software the quality was WAY better. Try Power DVD, they have a free try out player I believe. Also read my review on the IBM thinkpad T40. Most incredible and best laptop I have EVER owned! comparing the Dell to the IBM is like comparing a KIA Vehicle to a BMW.

I purchased a Dell 600m this week and have basically satisfied with it. This is the first modern laptop I have owned. (Somebody gave me a 486 laptop a few years ago.) I agree with most of this review, but not all of it. Here are my comments on his review:

Agree:
- good delivery time for me -- I purchased it online on Saturday and received it the next Friday with 3-5 day shipping.
- nice screen
- reasonably good battery life
- poorly designed keyboard -- I actually was impressed with the layout of the keyboard (no annoying key placements and good key size), but I did notice the problem with the key corners. However, unless you type very "aggressively," I don't think you'll be in danger of "ripping off a key." Even in the two days I've had it, I have gotten used to the keyboard so that I no longer notice the problem.
- creaky sounding -- if you close the screen and carry the laptop, it can sound a little "creaky," but I realized this is just the hinge joint on the monitor. The screen catch does not hold the monitor tightly against the laptop proper. If hold the screen tightly against the keyboard, the creaks go away. There is also a slight shifting sound from inside if you tilt it around. (It sounds as if the hard drive or something isn't very tightly mounted.) This can be disconcerting at first, but I don't think it is a serious problem.

Disagree:
- palm rest heat -- While the palm rest does get warmer than would be ideal, I would not say it is unreasonable. At least on my unit, I would certainly not call it "hot" -- just "warm." For comparison, it's probably a little cooler than the top of a CRT that's been on for a few hours.
- DVD drive/software -- works fine for me
- media (i.e. AVI) performance -- also works fine for me

Not sure:
- weight -- haven't weighed my unit, but doesn't feel too heavy

My configuration:
- 14.1" SXGA+ screen
- 64MB ATI Radeon Go 6xxx (not sure model #)
- 512MB DDR RAM (two 256MB SODIMMs)
- Pentium M 1.4GHz
- 40GB HD
- Dell wireless network mini-PCI card (i.e., not Centrino card)
- Windowz XP Pro
- WordPerfect 11 Suite
- purchased refurbished unit from Dell Outlet
