| haplo321's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 600M (600MBS1) PC Notebook |
Ok, I took my own advice and returned my Inspiron 5150 and purchased the 600m instead.(I had posted my review on Inspiron 5150 previously)
I've been using it for the past week and I believe I have narrowed down some differences between the two. The two laptops are from different classes, the 600m is built for mobility while the 5150 is more for performance. You might still be wondering which one you should get though, so I'll try to explain the differences between the two, and hopefully it will help you decide which one may be better suited to you. You might want to read my earlier post on the 5150 to see what I didn't like about that. The 600m resolved most of the problems I had with the 5150 but have brought up some new issues.
The 600m is very light compared to the 5150. it's weighs about 4 to 5 lbs, which is about half the weight of the 5150. Mine came with a 1.7Ghz centrino processor which is one of the fastest available and had a 14" LCD display. The maximum resolution of 1400x1050 provides crisp and clear fonts and is well suited for general usage. The performance of this laptop is satisfactory, but not great. Intel compares their 1.7Ghz Centrino to the 2.6Ghz, so I didn't think I'd notice a big difference in performance compared to the 3.06Ghz P4 processor that was in my 5150. Although the difference is small, I thought I should mention that you will definitely notice a drop in performance when you use the 1.7Ghz Centrino. The Intel Pro Wireless Lan works well with the 600m (after my bad experiences using the Dell Truemobile wireless mini pci card I decided not to get this upgrade) I received an average bandwidth of 1700kps with the Intel Pro wireless, which is about 200-300 more than my other laptop which is just a regular pentium 4 processor. Also to my surprise, is that the 600m generates a lot of heat. After about 3 to 4 hours of usage it gets extremely hot, the heat is generated at the bottom of the laptop by the battery area, as well as on the left wristpad, so the heat does becomes a problem after a while. I was starting to sweat like a pig after a while. Another issue that I had with the 5150 was that there were no volume control located on the laptop, the 600m resolved this. There are 3 volume controls on the laptop, two to decrease/increase the volume and one for mute. Which I think is great. And finally and the least important to me is that the 600m is very sleek in design. It's a beauty compared to the 5150, and it also comes in different colors.
So in summary here is my impression of the 600m. It's light, and it's portable. Good for people who tend to move around alot and who don't plan on using processor intensive applications with it. Although it's light, it operates very hot, so if you're one of those who like to sit in bed with the laptop on your lap, this laptop will most likely give you 2nd or 3rd degree burns! If you're buying this to play games it also may not be your laptop of choice. In my opinion, this laptop is probably best suited for students, and business professionals on the go.
btw, if you do go out to purchase a laptop from dell, I is MANDOTARY that you go to www.couponmountain.com to see if they have an ecoupon for dell. I purchased the 600m using an ecoupon I found from them, and saved an extra $125! Trust me it works!
