| em1164's Full Review: Apple iBook 12.1 in. (M8861LL/A) Mac Notebook |
I initially got my iBook because I wanted to explore the Mac's. Everyone in my family has been Mac users and I knew I had to see why. I ordered it through a loan, and it went over the loaned amount by just $87 dollars. When I called Apple they said that they could not get the bank to extend to credit to cover that lousy $87! But they went out of their way, and reduced the price by nearly $110... this was very surprising to me, just because I am not used to such extreme kindness from people I have never even met before. I have now been using my iBook for 2 months and an very satisfied. I will never look back to my PC world, just because the easy of use on the Mac far surpasses any Window based program I know. I am so satisfied I am actually getting the new iMac desktop computer along with apples new iPods. I can highly recommend this product and actually any Apple product.
How it works
When you first receive your iBook you will be welcomed and asked questions to set up some preferences and to set up your admin account for the machine, and don't worry you can add more users, and at different accessibility levels as well, you can pick and chose what others users on that machine can use as the Administrator. When you are all done, it will ask you to register it, you can choose to do this step now or later. After you are at the desktop. When you first start, there is something called a dock, which can be placed either at the left, bottom, or right hand sides of the monitor. The dock is like a start menu for a Mac. Within the dock is pre installed software. It comes with the essentials, Finder, which is like "My Computer", it houses all the programs. Mail, can handle all of your e-mail, you have to set this up in its own interface though. iChat, which is like AIM, enables you to Instant Message your friends. Safari, is a new internet browser being tested by apple, I prefer to use this greatly over Explorer, just because there is a handy little option to block annoying pop-up windows. Sherlock, now this is one of the most helpful programs in the Mac. Sherlock has a search engine ability, Picture function which can search for any picture you could ever want, Stocks show all current stock prices, Movies, enter your zip code and it searches for movie theaters in your area and all of the playing times of the movies there, Yellow Pages, just like the paper kind, Sherlock has its own EBay interface built in, Flights, check the status of any flight from any airport and get a LIVE birds eye view map of the plane and where it is in relation to the start and finish points, Dictionary, looks up words from Dictionary.com, Translation, now this one is amazing, it translates English to Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Japanese, Dutch, Russian, French, Spanish, German, Greek, Italian, and Portuguese, it also uses all the appropriate accents and symbols of that particular language. Also in Sherlock is Apple Care where you can get help topics for your problem, and solutions on how to fix them. Also in the Dock is an Address book, and a very comprehensive one at that. It comes with iCal which is like a date planner and reminder device. iTunes, the best way to store downloaded music, listen to music, create playlists and burn them to CD's, and now in the new free download of the updated iTunes is a place where you can purchase individual tracks of music, each for just $0.99! On the dock there is iPhoto, this is a program that organizes pictures and when a digital camera is connected, automatically downloads all the pictures, you can also create photo albums and print of the photo through apple with this program. iMovie, I am not too familiar with this program but is one that can manage movie clips from the internet or from your camcorder. Quicktime player is included which plays media. Then there are system preferences which is like the control panel for the Mac, you control every aspect of your Mac from system preferences. And finally there is the Trash can, and that is self explanatory. All there is on your desktop when you first log in is the "Macintosh HD", all your programs, files, everything can be found here. So overall, this mac comes with very satisfying features, I am happy with it, and I hope this REVISED review will help you! Thanks!
