I have a slightly older version of the N800c with a 1.7 GHz processor, not the 2.0 GHz problem. Where I go to college, all the Freshmen are required to purchase the same laptop, so I've seen my share of these laptops, and have to say I'm not impressed.
What this laptop does well.
This laptop may not have too much going for it, but it isn't all bad.
The case is very durable. I have not seen any one of the 500 some of these laptops, which are now nearly 2 years old, that has actually fallen apart. For the most part, the case itself looks almost as good as new since the surface hides scratches very well. The clasp is solid, and easy to open. And the shape, without any extending pieces, makes it so that there really isn't anything that can get knocked off the case.
The screen is a pretty good size, not to mention durable. The screen on this laptop extends to within an inch of each side. While the angle at which you can still make out what is on the screen is not as good as a CRT (big desktop monitor), it is very good for a laptop. Also, of the hundreds of these laptops circulating around campus, I've only seen one or two where the screen has actually cracked. Even with a cracked screen, the laptop is still usable, it just gets a big black line through it.
What this laptop doesn't do well.
This laptop has about as many things going for it as it has going against it.
The battery life is very good... at first. With a new battery, you will get very near the 3 or 4 hour estimated battery life while doing things that aren't processor intensive (writing a document, not playing a highly graphical game). but after a few months of moderate use, the battery life drastically decreases to less than 1 hour. I don't have too much experience with different laptops, so I'm not sure how this compares to them, but I do know that it is very annoying.
The 60 Gig hard drive, at least the one they put in the machines at our school, is not a good idea. I've personally only had my hard drive die once on me, but that is once too many. The only thing I can think of that might have caused this is I would sometimes type with it in my lap (it is a laptop), and the movements might have caused the hard drive to get damaged. While I have only killed one hard drive, there are others who have managed to go through 5 or 6 hard drives in the 18 months we've had our machines. The best story I've heard yet is that the edge of someones laptop got hit with a paper cup, and 30 seconds later the laptop was frozen with a blue screen of death. So if you don't want to buy a new hard drive every 3 months, I'd stay away from the 60 Gig hard drive.
Conclusions.
This laptop is a decent machine at best, but I just can't recommend this laptop to anyone. The price may be competitive with other companies products, but there isn't anything great about these laptops. I know that the 60 Gig hard drive dies a lot, but I don't know too much about the other hard drives. If you are looking for a new laptop, I'd say stay away from this one, you'll probably be sorry.
