| slpxgblake's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario 906US (470047-897)... |
I needed a good computer for my graduate school work but I didn't have a lot of money so I bought this computer which was the cheapest I could find from a reputable company. It has a fast 1500 AMD processor and the standard 256K of RAM seems adequate for running WindowsXP, even with the computationally intensive engineering programs I use. The DVD drive is a good feature although it is a little loud. I love the display, although it is small it is incredibly crisp and the colors are rich although, as with most flat screens, you have to get the angle right for best viewing. The keyboard is also quiet and although I don't like the mousepad on most laptops, this one is better than most. Compaq also makes reinstalling the OS with all the factory programs easy with a set of CDs. I also like that the laptop has all of the ports on the back necessary to hook up to an external mouse, monitor, and keyboard without requiring a docking station. My only real problem has been that after a while the cursor keys start executing other commands like "save as" which is annoying but is always fixed by reinstalling Windows so this is probably a Compaq/Windows software problem rather than a hardware problem. The downsides are that RAM is very expensive for this computer and the hardrive is only 20 GB. The laptop also only comes which Microsoft Works and doesn't include MS Word. I tried using Works for a while but it crashed so often that I eventually uninstalled it and got Office which works fine.
HP/Compaq support is also very good. I had a motherboard problem with this computer and HP had the computer picked up, fixed, and returned all within one week with no cost to me. I also had very minimal wait times on the phone.
I bought this computer in December 2002 for $750. I am very happy with the value and would recommend this computer to others.
