Desktop replacement? In terms of power it sure is. Fully optioned up it is a quick, smooth machine, with a great display, excellent keyboard, pretty good battery life, good DVD performance, etc.
The question is, at what cost? Let's face it, buying a laptop is always about compromise, and the compromise with the big Dell is pretty obvious. The thing is built like a small apartment block. It is HEAVY and somehow it seems heavier than it is. Perhaps that's because of its sheer bulk.
So it's not really a laptop at all. More of a portable computer. Remember the old lunchbox style luggables? They had no battery option because it was always assumed that you'd be working on a desk near a power point, but come the end of the day you could take the thing home. That may seem sort of archaic, but of the truth be told, how many people actually do leave their laptops in the same place all the time anyway--certainly most of my clients do.
So the weight of the Dell 7500 could be a big issue or no issue at all depending how you use the machine. I have a client who has bought these machines for all their people, most of whom take it home once a week on Friday night. Of course, the company could have bought 2 desktops for the price, one for work and one for home, but still...
The real problem for Dell is that the Gateway 9300 machine does everything the Dell 7500 does (albeit marginally slower for the same spec), but is also noticeably lighter, a bit thinner, has better battery life, slightly better finish, better sound and in-built video grabbing functions.
That being the case, there's not really a convincing reason to buy this machine.
