| ironblunt's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 (G650YT) PC Notebook |
About 7 months ago, I was looking to purchase a powerful laptop that could begin the match the power of my desktop at home. I looked around and found high ratings for the Dell Inspiron 7500 and have not been disappointed. Although on the bulky side, it's more than powerful enough for me to work on without experiencing any discomfort or performance issues. The specs on my box were a 600 mHz Pentium 3 processor with 128 MB RAM, 8 MB video, 12 GB HD space and a built in floppy/CD-ROM drive and a Xircom 100/10 + 56K PCMCIA card It came with Windows 2000 but I installed red hat 6.1 over that and upgraded my memory to 192 with no problems.
The keyboard is large (not quite as large as a PC keyboard) and i found the large screen comfortable to look at and the extra monitor real estate is essential to my productivity. The only two drawbacks to this purchase was the cost (my configuration at the time ran over $3500) and the size of this thing. Be careful which laptop bag you buy because this monster may not fit in all of them.
For linux users, you can order this laptop with Red Hat 6.1 pre installed or if you prefer to do it yourself, there are plenty of sites where you can print out the documentation for installing it yourself. The only problem I did encounter and this was mostly a Xircom thing was the lack of a linux driver for my particular PCMCIA card. otherwise, I use this notebook for everything. I strongly recommend people looking for a powerful laptop to consider this machine.
