| LilScamp's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 (G650YT) PC Notebook |
I've always been a sucker for a powerful computer; big screens, lots of RAM, and raw speed set my heart palpitating. Imagine my dismay when I realized that I was not going to be able to lug my desktop system with me when I went to study in Europe last spring. I was certain that my time abroad would be marvelous, yet I also knew, in my heart of hearts, that a semester without a computer (and the games that I spend inordinate amounts of time playing on it!) would be insufferable. What was a girl to do?
The answer was obvious: purchase a laptop system with all the power of a desktop. At first I was a little bit skeptical that such a computer could be found; then, my parents bought me my Dell Inspiron 7500 for Christmas. I was amazed.
This laptop system is actually faster and more powerful than my desktop system ever was. With 128 big MBs of RAM, I am able to play computer games and write term papers at the same time! (I hope none of my professors are reading this. ^_^) The DVD drive is a nice touch, especially when coupled with the huge 15" screen. How novel - a laptop with a DVD drive and a screen that is actually large enough to watch movies on. The display is excellent; colors are bright, and you don't need to be sitting perfectly in front of your screen in order to see, unlike many laptops. Best of all, system components only rarely need to be swapped. It is possible to use the DVD drive and the floppy drive at the same time. The only swapping that I ever need to do is to change between the battery and my Zip drive. The keyboard is very nearly full-sized; I do a lot of writing, but nevertheless I am extremely comfortable on this machine. Finally, games are terrific on this system; 3D graphics look great!
I have only had two problems with my system so far. The first problem was a somewhat freak incident that required me to reset my motherboard; a service representative walked me through the process on the phone. On the second occasion, I somehow managed to break the "h" key on my keyboard. Dell sent someone to my house within 24 hours and replaced the entire keyboard for free. I was very happy with Dell's service both times.
The greatest drawback to the Inspiron 7500 is its size; it really isn't very portable and is quite heavy. I would not recommend this system if you need to carry your computer with you somewhere every day, or if you are only interested in applications that don't require all the fancy multimedia enhancements that add to the bulkiness of this computer. However, if you put power above portability as I do and are interested in a semi-portable desktop alternative, you really cannot go wrong with this system. I highly recommend it.
