| qarana's Full Review: Dell Latitude C600 (220-6670) PC Notebook |
I’ve been using the C600 for 3 months now and still marvel at its performance, ease of use, and mobility.
When it came time to buy a laptop, I already was familiar with the Dell Latitude’s reputation and performance, having tried out my boss’s Latitude CPt for a few months. And yet, I dreaded commuting with his 9 pound workhorse. My only concern was losing performance if I chose a lighter machine.
My presentations often include PowerPoint slides with imbedded avi movies and some use of DVDs. The C600 advertised as a balance between mobility and performance. I took the chance, thinking I could return it if it lacked the performance I needed.
It has worked liked a dream!
I purchased the system with 256MB RAM, 10GB HD, DVD, Win2000 Professional, and a replicator port for use of the computer at my desk. At work, the computer does a fantastic job as a desktop substitute. When I need to go home, I slip the computer into a laptop sleeve, throw the computer into my backpack and head off for an hour-long bus commute home, sometimes over rough roads. The C600 has worked flawlessly while on the bus, even though the unsteadiness of my finger made me resort to using the TrackStick rather than the TouchPad that I find easiest to use. All my applications run fast and effortlessly.
I was greatly impressed with the performance of the video playback even with what seemed a mere minimum 8MB SGRAM. Not having a DVD player at home, I hooked up the computer to my VCR with the provided RCA plug adapter and sat back to enjoy Matrix and a few other movies. The playback was outstanding! I did notice some occasional frame skips when resuming the movie from a pause, but once the DVD got going again, it played seamlessly.
The C600 has performed my Powerpoint presentations without problems. While the 14.1 inch XGA TFT screen doesn’t help much with Photoshop image work, I still do much of my web page design on the road (not to mention watching occasional full-length DVD movies on a single battery!). Only on rare instances the laptop failed to wake successfully after being undocked from the port replicator (about once a month after being undocked 1-2 times a day!), so I’ve been careful to save my work before Hibernation or Standby.
The hot-swap modular bay has been very useful, allowing me to switch out my 3 1/2 inch drive with either the DVD, an extra battery, or nothing (the blank "travel module" reduces the weight to under 5 pounds!).
Overall, I am immensely pleased with the C600. It is trully a mobile presentation workhorse.
