| ze_shark's Full Review: Dell Latitude C600 (220-6670) PC Notebook |
This machine seems and feels more rugged and robust than its predecessors of the same line which displayed an amazing consistency in their weak points.
The absence of a 2nd USB port is about the only flaw in an otherwise very attractive feature set.
Some stupid design flaws such as the location of the power inlet on the right side (where you would like some free space for mousing) have been corrected as well.
Overall HW/Bios config seems robust, no problem experienced. Kbd keys are surprisingly strong to actuate, and the useless stick is sometimes annoying. The touchpad still 'features' spurious clicks, but that problem already existed in the previous model.
Being limited to 20Gb HD is borderline tight.
One area where the C600 does not deliver AT ALL is the advertised capability to support a dual screen config in pan mode using the SXGA video board bundled with 1GHz CPUs.
Although explicitely advertised on their website, it does not work under WIN2K. An embarrassed Dell rep told me that it is only supported with Win98, which Dell does not support on this machine ... ridiculous.
One last note: forget about docking stations.
I grew so tired of endless ethernet and BIOS problems with the previous model so I did not even bother trying on this one.
All this may sound pretty negative, but in view of the problems encountered by colleagues on their Vaios or their Portégés, Dell's Latitude remain a safe choice for a dependable and effective work tool.
