I have had a Dell laptop for a year now. My wife also has one. We ended up having it as our company provides it as a desktop replacement and we take it home almost every night. At work, we have a docking station.
Now to start with the review, my wife's laptop has had a new fan and the motherboard has been replaced TWICE. My motherboard was replaced once. That is a very bad average if you have to shell out that kind of money out of your own pocket.
The motherboards need to be replaced even if you have a faulty port! Well that is true for all computers but laptops take on much more abuse than desktops, which just lie in a corner. With a laptop, you tend to lug it around and occasionally bump them against things. Anyway, I expect laptops to be build more sturdy.
Another major irritant is the heat. It gets very hot after half an hour of use and the fan is very load.
We had IBMs A22 and T20 and they were far superior than the Dells.
To sump up:
1. Slow CDROM
2. Loud and ineffective Fan
3. Gets very HOT after a while
4. Heavy
5. No "Night Light"
6. Poor Speakers
7. Motherboard goes bust often
BottomLine(s):
1. Avoid if you plan to frequently dock and undock them
2. Do not buy without a warranty. Trust me I am against extended warranties but after speaking with out hardware manager, these babies do need to be covered!
3. Loud fan and overheating further contribute to motherboards going bust
4. An OK machine with no frills
5. Expensive for such features or a lack of them!
