The IBM Thinkpad 23 compares very well with the Dell Inspiron 8100. Both are very powerful and portable machines. I think IBM is a lighter machine than Dell and it is just as powerful. It has a good screen size, good keyboard and allot of other important and useful features.
The 23 is the latest in the Thinkpad (T) series. It only weighs 5.4 pounds. It contains support for an (optional) 802ll.b wireless receiver which is built into the screen bezel. There is also an embedded security chip. The security chip is great because it allow hardware enabled security such as encryption. It also enables PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) which is a smart card type security feature.
I like this portable notebook because it has a 14 inch display and is one of the best screens for a laptop on the market. It provides sharp and colorful images when viewed at any angle. It comes with a tiny night light above the screen. However, it is not a good light and only helps to see the left hand(upper) part of the keyboard.
I also like the keyboard. It is like other Thinkpad keyboards. It has a Trackpoint pointing stick, left and right mouse scrolling functions, speaker control buttons, and an access key. The key is for setup utilities and help guides. The keyboard is a good full size and leaves allot of room to set up a digital camera, a wireless module (bluetooth) or a compactflash reader.
I love the performance of Thinkpad 23. The battery life is 2 1/2 hours which is not great. It is is similar in terms of performance to the Dell unit(8100).
