First off, the laptop in the picture is NOT the computer I'm talking about. I own a true 2435-S255 w/o wireless that looks different from the one pictured. I purchased this computer when I was fourteen for about $1100, a steal deal at the time.
I've been very pleased with almost every aspect of the computer. The 40 GB hard drive is plenty, the 512 ram is nice, and the 32mb GeForce 4 graphics card is also good (I frequently play Generals, NFS 6, Tony Hawk, Madden, NBA live, etc). Not to mention the 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 processor and a CD burner/DVD player. 1 3/4 years later all of the above have worked perfectly and this computer is still quite up-to-date: you can buy the same laptop in the store now for a similar price.
Some of the features on this computer are invaluable to me, one of which is the dial volume control on the side of the computer. With it I always have complete control over the volume--in one second I can have it full blast, halfway, completely muted, whatever. 3 USB 2.0 ports, two in back and one on the side, have also proven very useful. The location of the headphone/mic jacks was placed well. I also like the keyboard a lot, it has a very nice feel and is quiet (compared to, say, my brother's Dell Inspiron 8200).
Among the few gripes I have for the laptop is the cooling system. You need a good one for a hot Pentium 4, and fans on the bottom aren't the way to go. But I'm only complaining about the noise of the fans running a lot, and the personal heater it makes, because I've NEVER had the computer crash or work in any way not normal because of this. The screen is one thing I wish was brighter, but it is still good... no problems with it except for that. On a whole, it is a bigger computer, but that's taking into account a 15" screen, so therefore it would be bigger. The harmon/kardon speakers are okay, but they are not very loud... and crackily with feedback at their loudest.
Despite the above cons, I believe they should not overshadow in any way the way everything else has worked. I've used my Toshiba laptop everyday for almost 2 years, and there have not been any defects in the computer whatsoever, no paint rubbing off or any scratches (nice brushed cover repels those), and it even fell off my bike once onto concrete while in its case--no problems. I recommend this laptop to anyone who might come across one or buy one--I've been thoroughly pleased with my experience with it.
