| avaloncourt's Full Review: Lexar Media USB Universal Reader |
I have owned the Lexar Media USB Universal Reader for about one year now. The reader has beed used on Windows 98SE, ME and XP computers with equal success on all. The installation was a snap for all platforms and the software/drivers worked flawlessly.
This was my second reader because I had previously purchased another reader from a different manufacturer and it was such an annoyance getting it running and keeping it running that I did what I could to find another method of reading cards.
I have an Olympus E-10 and I would never consider transferring files out of it across a USB cable. The files are 14MB each and I generally shoot at least 50 pictures at any one time. I would have to spend an entire day transfering files with a camera connection.
Since I use SmartMedia, traditional Compact Flash and IBM Microdrives in a Compact Flash format, I needed a reader flexible enough to handle anything I threw at it. The Lexar Media USB Universal Reader did just that. Just insert your card and the computer displays the contents as a drive letter on your "My Computer" windows. Open up that drive letter and transfer files as easily as transfering to and from a hard drive.
Compact Flash cards fit into a PC-Card adaptor so this reader also accepts anything in the PCMCIA card format. For those of you with IBM Microdrives, please keep in mind that you will need the official IBM PC-Card adaptor for the MicroDrive or your drive will not be read. This is nothing special or unique. Nothing else will read the MicroDrives without it's own IBM adaptor. If you didn't get one with your drive (like me) you can always buy one.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this reader to anyone who was in need of an external reading solution.
