mskvarenina's Full Review: Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router
As you may have seen, as of 1/20/07 there are 127 reviews on this product. I'm not going to go into any depth on details that have probably been covered 127 times before. What I can tell you is that I recently replaced my NETGEAR WRG614 with the Linksys WRT54GS in an effort to eliminate the constant loss if IP between my wireless devices and the router. Not only has the loss of connectivity stopped but transfer speed has increased significantly. Why? I don't know but I'm convinced at this point the WRT54GS is far superiod to the supposedly equivalent NETGEAR product.
To start from the top, I was using a NETGEAR WRG614 for several years. Almost daily, for unknown reasons the NETGEAR would simply stop working. I'd be surfing the web and suddenly get the "page cannot be displayed" message. I'd check the connection and see that I was still connected to the router but it simply wasn't passing IP to my laptop.
I tried everything, the latest firmware, disabling of the power management of my wireless adapter within the laptop, calling tech support, but nothing seemed to help.
In frustration I decided to try a new router and chose the Linksys WRT54GS. I chose the Linksys because I knew that Cisco purchased Linksys and since Cisco is the leader in networking I figured Cisco would update and create products that perform at Cisco's standards.
The good news is the Linksys after 1 month has never dropped my IP connection. No longer to I get the "page cannot be displayed" message. BUT as a bonus, I have seen my data transfer speeds go from an average of 15mpbs to a typical 24mbps. Now of course this is all dependent on yoru ISP but at least in my case the speed increase is significant and very noticable.
So to sum up, purchasing and/or moving to a Linksys WRT54GS will be a reward experience, especially if you're currently experiencing unexplainable loss of connections and slower download speeds.
