Hi ... I guess we will agree to disagree.

My brother is extremely knowlegeable at DVD burning and has done it for years. When using burning software such as Nero, the standard burning format used for creating a data disc is CD-ROM (ISO). You can simply make a data disc by using the burning software that came with the DVD/CD burner in your computer. (Most DVD/CD burners come with burning software.) Just put the file at the root directory. When you insert the DVD/CD into the Liteon player/recorder, it will automatically recognize the upgrade and offers a screen that asks if you wish to proceed with the install.

Also, we have used Maxell and CompUSA brand DVD RW discs with success in the machine. We have used both 2X and up to 4X disc speeds with no problem. The literature that comes with the product says that for DVD-plus RWs that you can use the following brands: Phillips, Imation, TDK, Verbatim, Ricoh ... and for DVD-plus Rs you can use Phillips, TDK, Sony, Imation, Mitsubishi. For major brands of DVD-RW and DVD-R discs, the brands are more limited; the most name-recognized brand being Imation.

I already listed a phone number in my review. If you need an email address, here are some: marketing_us@liteonit.com or write to us_service@liteonit.com. To email the head office, use this: dctw_service@liteonit.com. These email addresses, and the phone numbers written in my review, came from the documentation included with the product.

We have been playing with this Liteon DVD player/recorder for about a month and have done extensive tests on it. So far so good! It's been a great machine.

Sounds like you have some experience with this product. Maybe you would like to write your own Epinions review on it.

An Alternate View - RUN !! (Reply to this comment)
by trustmeonthis
A thorough review, uncharacteristically positive from all else I've read elsewhere and from my own experience. Additionally, you omitted a significant hurdle in the firmware upgrade process -- after you've gone to the effort to find a RAR extracter you have to create an ISO image of the firmware on the CD ! LiteOn does not provide either RAR extracting or ISO-burning software for you and the latter will cost you a trip to a software store.

Here's my capsule review recently posted on Cnet.com:

Pros: Versatile recording format, both /- R/RW; inexpensive ($170 after $30 rebate); smaller unit than most; Firewire input on front panel

Cons: Horrifying support - no phone numbers, no email, broken English FAQs, firmware updating requires you to find your own RAR archive extractor (7-Zip free), but even worse is that you have to get your own software to burn an ISO image to CD for the firmware update ! Horrible. Poor disc compatibility ! Cannot use popular DVD-R brands, must use unknown foreign ones like M-Star, Daray, Nanya, Arita, etc ! And they must apparently be "slow" discs that are 1x or 2x, not the faster 4x and 8x. This unit shouldn't even be marketed in the US -- pathetic.

Borrowing from a memorable line in "Minority Report", "RUN ... RUN !!" Do not waste your time and money with this device !!

Sounds good... (Reply to this comment)

This sounds like a nice machine. My DVD player only plays MP3 and only if it is on a CD. For some reason it won't play MP3 files from a DVD. Pretty wierd huh?
